Re: [Board/Tactical Game]: Space Dealer, reviewed by ShannonA (5/5)

I love Space Dealer as well, and think it's a great game, but I'd a few caveats:

- In my experience, the game just doesn't work with 3 players at all. The way they've scaled the card decks, the game is over - everything that can be built has been built, and everything that can be delivered has been delivered - at least 5 minutes before the soundtrack runs out. There needs to be some tweaking there.

- In my copy of the game, the Fusion mines are grotesquely over-powered. I'm not sure if this was fixed in a later printing that you might have, but in the version that's been commonly available these need to be house-ruled to produce two goods of your choice rather than four goods (the expansion fixes this).

There is a small-box expansion available, at least in Europe, that really helps balance the basic game out a lot, although again I have to add caveats: they added a dumb reward for being the last (?) person to get to tech level 3 and a "mop and bucket brigade", both of which we threw out. But the new Gizzi cards and tech are great and put the game in a much better spot, balance-wise, than it is out-of-the-box.

Anyway, Space Dealer is a very fun game which is easy to recommend. Just stick with exactly 4 players, and if you can, try to get the expansion after you've played a few times if you like the game.
