A cheaper way

One method I have used for 1st and 2nd edition is the mutations in Gamma World. 1st, 2nd, 4th editions, Omega World and Mutant Future* are the easiest to work with and adapt to D&D. Heck the 4th edition was written in mind for compatability with AD&D 2nd edition. A few rolls laid on an existing creature and you have something like a 3.X template.

Easy, simple and orcs that produce webbing or have porcupine spines can be memorable.

*Since MF is a free download, this is the cheapest method.

Every bug you describe in the review sounds like a feature to me.

"I had to make some creative adjustments just to get anything that wasn’t a bird-like quadrupedal fish with a sticky, prehensile tongue or a geometric, slithering, hairy, phasing, nightmare combination."

Good God man, I've got those two creatures immediately! Both are perfect for my Swords & Wizardry campaign starting next week.

I'm ordering the book this Saturday when I show up at my FLGS.

I was going to ask if this could be adapted to a Gamma World style game! Sounds like it could be...
