You pick up your attribute die and your skill die, roll them, and add them together hoping to beat a target number. It was the die mechanic that first brought me to the Cortex System (yeah, I finally get to use all those dice in my die pack now that I’ve stopped playing D20!). Some people have complained about this being too random. Yes, it’s more random than a single die system.
Actually, dice pools are less random than a single die roll. Rolling a d20, you've got a 5% chance of getting any result from 1 to 20 -- a totally flat probability curve. Roll multiple dice together, and you get something approximating a bell curve, with the mean value much likelier to occur than the extremely bad or extremely good result. The range of possible results goes up -- as you say, 5 to 30 for 5d6, vs 1 to 6 for 1d6 -- but the variability actually goes down.

As a suggestion, in a paragraph in which you're dinging a publisher for missing typographical errors, check your own spelling too. The errors are the kind that slide right past an automated spell-check: "getting passed" instead of "getting past", and "you're" (contraction) in place of "your" (possessive).

Two observations:
- I think it's reasonable to hold a professionally-published work which costs money to higher standards than a free review written by an amateur reviewer in their spare time.
- If a review full of typos says that the book being reviewed is full of typos, I put a lot more stock in it than I would if it claimed that said book was free of typos.

While I appreciate the irony involved I agee with you completely Wyvern! There is a big difference between a free review posted on a gaming website and a professionally published work.

I take this on board, but I don't think you really discussed in the review how the game handled its source material and managed to miss the mark therein - what I read was more dominated by mechanics discussions (and this of a "rules-lite game").
How did this RPG attempt to emulate the series on which it's based, and why did it fail to do so, in your opinion?

Which is really odd, because the BSG RPG has a fairly average complexity. While it is lighter than Space Opera it is more complex than Star Wars d6.
I've enjoyed playing the BSG RPG. I thought that it did a good job of emulating the series, and I've really enjoyed the mechanical changes made since the Serenity RPG.
