I was initially surprised that cities like Baldur’s Gate remained the same until I recalled that it wouldn’t make good financial sense to radically change the fantasy town you base most of your video games on.

But hasn't Neverwinter pretty much been wiped off the map? (I don't have the book, but I recall reading this somewhere.) I really wonder why they did that. You'd say that the Neverwinter Nights brand name is valuable enough to have kept the city around.

Good point, Number Six. I wonder if we'll see "Ruins of Neverwinter Nights"?
