Question [4E] A idea for a 'third' book for setting.

Each time a setting comes out we get 2 books. Players Guide and Campaign guide. Then we get an adventure tied ot the setting.

But, honestly I have little use for the adventure but I would DIE for a 3rd book that is very much Open Grave/Dragononicon style for the setting. A part Monster Manual part setting fluff book that has tiered foes for each of the levels of play. Flesh out the shorter examples in the Campaign guide and give some very solid examples of iconic setting foes. The Campaign guides sorta do this with the last small adventure chapters in the book, but these feel more like Campaign starters than fully fleshed out setting tools.

Thoughts?

Ah -- so monsters, with a few 3-5 page mini-adventures/large encounters?

Pretty much like the way Open Grave handles it. 3-5 pages of organization flesh out, teired monsters, and usually 1 example encounter. I could see a full book of these for each setting.

I can only see 1 book per setting, since the Demonomicon/Open Grave etc exists that fleshes out specific monster types.

That's not exactly right, no. About a third of the book is monsters. About a third of the book is adventure sites/locations/buildings/lairs. About a third of the book is fluff. And another fifteen or so pages of the book (yes, I know, shut up) is devoted to Important Entities.

Presumably the Important Dudes section would be enlarged for these books.

Re: [4E] A idea for a 'third' book for setting.

I'd be more interested in such a third book than our current "monster theme" books, like Open Grave. I don't want a zillion ways to use undead. I want some undead appropriate to a particular kind of setting, along with a lot of other stuff.

Of course, the problem with that is that a lot of people would only buy the setting books that interest them. OTOH, since I haven't bought, and don't intend to buy, any of the theme books, a couple of sales might be better than zero.

I wonder what such a scheme would do to average sales?

Re: [4E] A idea for a 'third' book for setting.

I just would find a book like this WAY more useful for building my own adventures. The problem with the adventures that do come out, while interesting they're not giving me the toolkit as a DM I need. Pack in the book a tear away map but with the setting locals on it, instead of the worldmap the Campaign setting book does. I just think it would be just right.

Re: [4E] A idea for a 'third' book for setting.

And the neat thing about such books is that they would be widely usable even outside of the setting.

You get monsters, you get encounters that vary from low level to high, and you get some sample politics and personas you can poach.

And they could be worked together so they interconnect.

An adventure hook attached to a persona, with a 3-5 page location, and monsters to populate it, all tied into the setting. The persona fluff and adventure hook fluff are setting specific, but poachable. And the monsters/encounter make a very neat little package. Then you can toss on a section of "fleshing out the adventure hook".

The 'mini adventures' need a catchy name. "Dark Sun Adventures" doesn't quite work for the title of the book. "Dark Sun Encounters" doesn't either... And "Dark Sun Adventure Hooks" doesn't sound like being hard-cover worthy.

Players Guide, Campaign Guide, Adventure Guide!

Forgotten Realm Adventure Guide
Eberron Adventure Guide
Dark Sun Adventure Guide

Got a nice ring to it. The question now is...how do you pitch this idea to the Dev team?

I'd like something that combined:
1. Dungeon Delve [adventures that cover levels 1-30; I can link them all in an adventure path, or part them out as mini quests; also, I can add or subtract from each of the adventures]
2. Maps and locations that were mentioned in the campaign guide, but elaborated a bit here.
3. Some new monsters specific to this campaign setting.
4. Magic items that are somehow tied to the campaign setting.

This, I dunno. Posting this on Enworld might help. You're right though; 'Adventure Guide' does have a nice ring to it.

Let's be fair--back when TSR launched their ill-considered web policy, the Internet was a new and somewhat frightening thing. I think they gravely overreacted, but I can also understand why they did so. WotC, on the other hand, has fourteen years of Internet experience, the OGL, the Official Fan Site experiment (which appears to have been positive to mixed at worst) and TSR's own mistakes to guide them. Adventure Guides are an awesome idea. Well done.
