WFB: Lizardmen vs. Beasts of Chaos...
A 2,250 point game against the local Beast player who, by the way, wrote the Wood Elf article for the newest US release of White Dwarf. That's his bird on the front of the magazine, too. Anyway. I brought the army that I detailed in my "Thoughts Requested" thread, with the Scar Veteran having the Sword of Hornet, etc. I also was almost perfectly spot-on about his army; I'll list what I remember here.
2 Bestigor Herds.
10 Furies.
2 units of 7 Centigors apiece.
3 or 4 units of Warhounds.
3 Beast Herds.
2 Chariots.
3 Minotaurs with Great Weapons.
Wargor BSB and Beast Lord, both Tzeentch-Marked.
I forget most of it, frankly. But the dice hated me, and I wasn't able to use my Terradons to kill off Beast Herds; I was reduced to using them to being a speedbump for a Bestigor Herd. Aside from that, here's some of what I remember:
The two Chariots charged the unit of Kroxigor and did 2 Impact Hits, but still killed 2 Kroxigor. I rolled for the Kroxigor and got 2 hits and 2 wounds, but apparently I can only kill 1 Chariot with 1 Kroxigor left, I can't allocate hits. Still, between the Kroxigor and a Saurus Warrior unit that charged in to rescue the Kroxigor, I crushed the two Chariots.
The Furies charged and killed the Kroxigor; the Kroxigor was less than 1" away from the Saurus Warrior unit at the time, but the Saurus unit was on the Kroxigor's flank. The Beast player said that he'd just hit the Kroxigor, since Furies skirmish. I went along with it, since I couldn't think of a decent response to that one. Any suggestions?
The Furies flew around annoying me, until a Beast Herd and the Furies charged my BSB's unit. The Beast Herd was in the front and the Furies were in the rear. The Sword of Hornet on my BSB undoubtedly saved a few Saurus, since I killed 3 Gors with it each turn. Because of the Saurus outmuscling the weedier Furies and Beasts, I was able to hang on long enough for the Kroxigor-saving Saurus unit to charge in again and take out the Furies. That unit would end the game locked in combat with another Beast Herd.
I lost the normal Skinks to bad tactical moves; I forgot to move the javelin Skinks once and they subsequently couldn't run far enough away from a charging Beast Herd, and I couldn't kill enough of his Centigors when they charged my blowpipe Skinks to make him take a Panic test and run off. Of course, that might have been because I could only stand and shoot with 3 of the Skinks instead of all 12. Might have made a difference.
The Salamanders didn't burn much of anything, but they did charge and break a Centigor unit (which would eventually run off the board). Then again, a Bestigor Herd was Wild Called into them, killed them and reclaimed the Centigors' banner.
The Chameleon Skinks did excellently, up until the point where they got charged by the Furies, autobroken and run down. I had killed off half of a Centigor unit and made him divert one or two other units to go after the Skinks. Had I been able to keep them alive longer, doubtless they would have done something.
The Minotaurs charged and chopped up my BSB's unit, but the BSB's unit managed to out-CR them, they failed their Break test and were run down.
While the surviving Kroxigor was charged by Furies, an Ambushing Beast Herd charged the rescuer Saurus unit in the flank. The Saurus stayed, and in the next round my Oldblood's unit countercharged, he failed his Panic test and ran off, eventually going off the board.
The Oldblood's unit, marred with horrendous rolls (on a challenge with the Oldblood, I managed to do all of 1 wound to a unit champion with the Oldblood's 7 Attacks), was broken by the two Bestigor Herds and their attending characters, as well as a unit of Warhounds. However, I rolled an 11 for getting away (one of my few halfway decent rolls all game), wasn't caught, and rallied the next turn. I was charged by the smaller Bestigor unit and the Warhounds, but I was able to hack through enough of the enemy to not worry about a severely problematic Break test.
End result: Draw. He was up about two hundred points, counting unit standards and table corners, but not enough to actually get a win. He probably would have won, considering, but I don't know. I was able to shut down his magic phase, most of the time, with my 7 or 8 Dispel dice; a Tzeentch Beast army doesn't scare me nearly as much as a cheesemonkey Tzeentch Mortal army. Being able to only take 1 unit of Tzaangors makes it much more feasible to actually fight the list instead of just rolling Dispel dice and praying. Bestigors are unpleasant, at least on the turn they charge. The whole army being so damned fast is annoying. I'm coming to the conclusion that Beasts of Chaos is more balanced than Hordes of Chaos...but considering how ludicrously abuse-prone Hordes of Chaos is, that ain't sayin' much. However, should I fight against this list again, I should probably drop something and take more Skink Skirmishers, but I'm not sure exactly what. I don't really feel like writing a fluff version of this one, since it isn't exactly inspiring.
