The Watch House Season Five, Episode Four, Pre-credits

The Watch House 5.04: Marked

Milli: The prodigal daughter of a Watcher family saved the world by killing the man she loved after her attempt to restore his soul went horribly wrong. Now, she wants to try and make amends.
William: The best Watcher student in the college survived Jacques's reign of terror, although he now walks with a limp and carries a cane.
Matthew: The born sorcerer continues to practice with his gift despite his guilt over the spell going so far wrong.
Andy: The inheritor of a lycanthropic curse he can control is in mourning for his friend.
Lucian: He seems to be of good family but lacking in money, and to have an interest in something the Watch are involved in...
Simon: His sister murdered by a demon, he joined the Watchers' hunt for the killer and was unable to find it.

Natalie: Gifted with visions by a descendant of the shamans who created the Slayer, she has returned to Africa to find out why...

Escher: The Watchers' Invigilator holds himself partially responsible for the disaster of the summer.
Charlotte: William's girlfriend wants to support him, but would rather not have to do so from the front line, or in sight of Milli.

Chase: Watcher Security officer and regular thorn in the group's side.
Helen: A semicompetent dabbler in transformative magic who once accidentally split Andy into two beings and was politely warned to stop that. And now apparently a target for someone sending demons to kill sorcerers.

--
Previously, on The Watch House:

Helen casting a spell on Andy.

Helen: Draw his burden from him…

Andy splitting in two.

Milli rounding on Helen.

Milli: Don't do that again.

A Torvaka demon, visible only to those who can see magic, chasing Helen into Simon's arms, and then into the office.

Milli: What have you been doing?
Helen: Nothing! Just... I joined a mailing list...

William looks over the site Helen joined.

William: This woman, Julianna... she posted a lot of good advice.
Helen: Yeah. She's gone into seclusion now after she got mugged or something. The post was really vague... And now I think I know why...
William: And this man died in a car accident last week, where...
Helen: "The car appears to have skidded sideways twenty-five feet, as if on ice, with no sign of an impact causing it..."

Lucian seeing the group destroy a Torvaka demon.

Lucian: So that's a real magic sword.
Milli: Yeah.

--
We open around the breakfast table. Simon is cooking eggs, Milli downing a cup of coffee.

Matthew: So, this morning we investigate leads.
Milli: Right.
Simon: Now, I can do a fry-up -
Andy: Yes.
William: Why am I not surprised...
Matthew: Big appetite.
Andy: All that energy has to come from somewhere.
Simon: What energy? He always seems kinda... mellow. Except when he's eating.
William: He has, ah... sudden... bursts of speed...
Charlotte: Often when he's eating.
Simon: I was going to suggest toast or cereal -
Andy: Bacon. Eggs. Sausages. Black pudding if you have any.

Enter Lucian, pale and drawn, wrapped in a blanket.

Matthew: Morning!

Lucian blinks at him and picks up the coffee pot.

Andy: That's double strength coffee.
Milli: Yes, I don't drink warm water.
Lucian: Hm.
Simon: Toast?
Lucian: Erm.
Simon: Cereal?
Lucian: Demons?

Everyone at the table looks at him. Andy pauses in the middle of biting an egg soldier. Then finishes without looking away.

Simon: So. A demon in my house. Again.
William: I think this time it was after... him.

Matthew looks up. Simon looks over at him, suspiciously.

Matthew: Me?
Simon: Why?
Matthew: Uh… magic...
Milli: Anything we can do about that?
Matthew: Magic?
Milli: Being targeted.
Matthew: Oh.
William: We could try and track the summoning effect.
Matthew: And stop it. No more attacking of anyone.
Simon: ... That seems like a good idea.

William: In the meantime, leads? There's the healer. She's five minutes down the road.
Milli: Oh yeah, good point.
Simon: The woman the demon wanted to kill before it killed my sister.
Lucian: ...

Matthew grimaces.

Matthew: So... how are you?
Lucian: Quite... well. My hangover is strangely absent.
Simon: And the whole... thing...
Lucian: Yes. Last night was... interesting...
Milli: Hey, don't look at me like it was my fault.

Simon glances at Matthew. He looks away.

Lucian: Yes. Well. Demon... s. About that... What else?
Milli: What else what?
Lucian: Demons. Spells. Magic swords. Ghosts?
Matthew: Mm-hmm. And vampires.
Lucian: Yes, you did mention vampires.
Milli: Yeah. Uh, lots of vampires.
Lucian: How could I forget... Are demons more dangerous? Are vampires more... likely to negotiate?
Milli: There are no friendly vampires. Trust me on this one.

William looks over at her, troubled, and she doesn't meet his gaze.

Lucian: So... are there friendly demons? How about sprites, pixies, hobgoblins?
Milli: No.
William: Well, we met a boggart once. Right little...
Matthew: And you thought I was a friendly demon -
William: That was Helen's fault.
Milli: Oh, yes. Also magic.
Lucian: Right. Well. What about... werewolves?

Milli, William, Matthew and Charlotte laugh uncomfortably. Andy looks intently at his toast.

William: Well, they're people -
Simon: But they're monsters.

Andy narrows his eyes slightly.

Matthew: (quickly) Got any milk?
William: Why? Are there more boggarts?
Matthew: Special milk?

Andy stops glaring at Simon and looks at Matthew, bemused.

Andy: ... You're not lactose-intolerant, are you?
William: Yes.
Milli: Yes.
Matthew: There's this thing, and only organic milk can stop it.
William: (muttering) Bloody boggarts.
Milli: A spell involving milk?
Matthew: More a reaction against the crass commercialisation of the industry.

Andy tuts, and goes to get his coat.

Lucian: ... What about zombies?
William: Sorry.
Lucian: Sorry there aren't, or sorry there are?
Milli: There are, but not around here lately. No-one here has died and come back.

Charlotte gives her a look. She ignores it.

Milli: So, do we have milk?
Matthew: Andy went to get it. Anyway, necromancy is a powerful and dangerous form of magic best left alone.
Simon: Hmph.

Lucian studies each of their faces in turn, and then the drinks cabinet.

Milli takes William aside.

Milli: This really isn't going terribly well.
William: We do usually get Mister Escher to do this bit. But this is one of the things we're supposed to learn...
Milli: I know...

She trails off as Lucian speaks up.

Lucian: So this is... fairly routine for you.
Milli: Fairly.
Lucian: Because this is reality. And ordinary people may... freak out when they face it. I can accept that. And I can more-or-less accept this. But why can you? How are you guys involved?
Matthew: Well, this is a family thing for most of us.
Lucian: Your dad?
Matthew: (mumbling) He's quite highly placed in the research library.
Lucian: And how do you keep all this secret?
Matthew: (reassuringly) We're not going to kill you.
Lucian: Right... because I know too much...?
Milli: You don't know the half of it. (shakes head) But we're not gonna kill you. We may have to hurt you if you run off and tell people -
Lucian: Is that the editorial 'we'?
Milli: ... No...
Lucian: And why not tell people?
Milli: Well, people would panic, for one thing.
William: And this kind of knowledge is dangerous. How to cast spells, ways to live forever...
Matthew: It could be the end of the world.
Simon: The what?
Matthew: Not literally -
William: Yes, actually, literally.
Lucian: Oh.
Charlotte: ... Toast?

Lucian sighs and massages his temple.

Lucian: So you're here to investigate this... demon attack?
Simon: Yeah.
Lucian: I take it the people you have to talk to won't all want to talk to you. (glances at Milli)
Milli: We can be...
Lucian: Persuasive?
Milli: I was gonna say 'persistent'...

--
Lucian keeps up with the group as they approach a semi-detached house.

Lucian: Hardly the Emerald City.
William: Julianna Wicklow. Forty-six. Attacked half an hour before...

William trails off and glances at Simon, not making eye contact.

Lucian: So... do you need any... assistance in working your way in here?
Andy: He does have the gift of the gab.
Milli: Or the gob. (sighs) If you think you can actually be helpful -
Andy: Can you bluff your way into a flat?
Lucian: I imagine so... So, is the plan to grab her and say something like "hand it over"?
Matthew: Depends. She might be innocent.
Milli: We just want to know what happened.
Lucian: Is that something only she would know?
Milli: Mister Escher said she has a bodyguard now... she cured his Gulf War Syndrome.
Lucian: That might make things interesting...
Milli: We are actually not here to attack her. Just ask her what happened.
Matthew: Although I have a fairly good idea.
Lucian: Hm. So do you want to say who you are or...?
Milli: Depends on the situation.
Matthew: She knows magic, so...
Milli: And the Council have been here -
Simon: Come on. Let's speak to the woman who got my sister killed.

Simon stalks towards the front door.

Matthew: Ah, no... No...
Simon: If she hadn't let that thing go -
Matthew: She probably couldn't stop it.
Simon: I know, I know... I just find it hard to be... detached.

Lucian raises a hand and steps up ahead of him... pausing as he looks at the doorframe.

Matthew: Runes. Warding.
Milli: So if a vampire came by...
Matthew: It couldn't even step onto the drive without an invitation.
Simon: Hm.
Milli: That's a bit showy, isn't it?
Matthew: Well -

The door opens and a thin middle-aged woman looks at them questioningly.

Julianna: They're not as reliable as the visitors talking very loudly as they stand in my doorway.
Milli: Uh... Hi.
Julianna: Good morning.
Milli: We're with the Council.
Matthew: The Watchers' Council.
Julianna: I rather assumed you weren't with the gas board.
Lucian: ... That stealthy approach went well.
Julianna: Tea?
Simon: We're here about the incident in July.
Julianna: (gently) I know you are.

She invites the group inside.

--
Matthew looks around the sitting room as Julianna pours tea.

Lucian: Now, we want to be as frank as possible -
Milli: It's not only you being attacked.
Julianna: Ah.
Milli: Anyone involved in magic for healing or defence, that we've seen.
Julianna: I wish I were surprised. I haven't been targeted again since drafting in an old friend to keep watch, but this is your second follow-up inquiry.
Milli: Ours?
Julianna: Not you personally. Tall fellow, closer to my age, black hair -
Milli: Chase?
Julianna: Yes, that was it.

Milli grimaces.

Milli: We'll be sure to get that information from him later.
Julianna: It said something, before it lunged... and I managed to numb the feeling in its hands. "Your life is forfeit."

Milli frowns. William nods slightly.

Julianna: I don't think I've ever directly angered anyone enough to bring down a curse like that... Except possibly Burroughs... So more people have already been killed?
Simon: (quietly) Yeah.
Milli: Burroughs?
Julianna: Nicholas Burroughs. Expert in calling up and casting out spirits. Called me a "busybody" on that internet forum thing you mentioned.
Lucian: Well, if you have any more information... please...
Julianna: That's really all I know. I'm sorry.
Matthew: Well. Thank you for your time.
Milli: You've been very helpful.

--
Milli is still frowning when the group leave.

Lucian: So, who's this Chase?
Milli: Watcher Security. Usually internal security...
William: I guess this is close enough to home for them to look into it directly.

--
Escher returns their call.

Escher: Apparently Chase spoke with this Burroughs already. I can give you his address, but... there's not much in the file...

Milli frowns.

Milli: Any way we can avoid talking to Chase about this?
Simon: He doesn't like you?
Milli: He feels that I have anger "issues". Fairly confident you would too if you met him. Unless you're Matthew.
Matthew: Um...?
Milli: He used you to gather information on the rest of us. Okay, mostly me, but still -
William: (loudly) So... He may not like... most of us... but he's usually pretty thorough when he investigates something.
Milli: So what happened here?
William: Have we ever heard of the Council calling off the Chase before? (pauses) Sorry.
Matthew: Burroughs could have some connection to things.
Milli: Maybe this Burroughs guy has some kind of spooky creepy un-investigative hand-wavy thing?
Matthew: It's... possible.
Lucian: ... If so, and if anything kicks off, I'm ducking.

Matthew looks at the large house warily. Milli leans close and murmurs a question.

Milli: Warded?
Matthew: Very.

Milli: Okay, we need to get inside. Off the street.

She taps her bag of death for emphasis.

Matthew: We could say we were from the Council looking at the pipes.
William: Why would the... oh, yeah, the other Council.
Milli: No, there's too many of us and we look too...
Charlotte: Studenty?
Milli: Yeah. Well, we could say we're... uhm...
Lucian: Internet fanboys!
Milli: Um?
Lucian: He makes a lot of noise online, doesn't he?
William: Right...

Lucian takes off his tie and stuffs it in his coat pocket, then undoes his top shirt button.

Lucian: Okay, look nervous.
Charlotte: You already look nervous.
Lucian: ... Yeah. Good.
Simon: I'd... rather not go in.
Andy: Yeah, maybe I should check out the back...

Milli nods, and they split off.

A man with fair hair and lean features inspects the group over his glasses.

Lucian: Mister Burroughs - Mister Burroughs?
Burroughs: Yes...?
Lucian: I hope you don't mind if... Sorry, I'm Nathan Lister. Nightlord23 on the Summoning Circle?
Burroughs: Yes...?
Lucian: We've, ah, we think you really, our club -
William: Coven.
Lucian: Yeah. we think you really know what you're talking about, know your stuff.

William quickly nods in agreement. Milli does so with a slight delay.

Lucian: Could we ask you some questions? We really... we really want to learn from you.
Burroughs: ... Come around to the garden.
Milli: We'd really like to see your house. Your take on the summoning thing is... really... fab.
Lucian: And I, ah, I really need to go.

He hops from foot to foot.

Burroughs: Oh for... come in.

Lucian darts upstairs.

Burroughs leads the remainder of the group into his living room. Milli joins Matthew as he inspects the bookshelves.

William: (quickly) This is great.
Milli: I know. Best day of my life! (mutters to Matthew) And you need to go as well.
Matthew: Where? ... Oh.

He walks over to Burroughs, who looks him up and down and nods very slightly.

Matthew: I, ah... which way... did Nightlord23 go?
Burroughs: Big breakfast, was it?
William: Long journey.

Milli narrows her eyes as she reads the titles of the books.

Charlotte looks nervously at the stag's antlers mounted over the fireplace. A pendulum swings under a large clock, ticking audibly.

She almost managed not to jump when Lucian comes back in.

Lucian: Great. Thank you.

Milli sets down her bag and unzips it quietly as Lucian talks.

Matthew looks over the upstairs landing, tries the bedroom door, then when it doesn't open her raises his hand and it clicks. He looks in briefly, noting a further set of bookshelves, turns around - and finds himself facing a transparent figure swathed in a dark grey robe and hood, as it slowly points an accusing finger at him.

Lucian: So, do you have any more of that... er...
Milli: You can drop it now.

She draws her sword.

Milli: We'll be asking the questions. What have you been up to? Sending more demons after people?
Burroughs: Er... what?
Milli: The demons. You're clearly intrinsically evil. I've decided. Your trick with the death threats?
Burroughs: Ah.
Milli: Yeah, you know what we're talking about, crazy evil man.

Burroughs walks over to his writing desk and pulls out a small sheet of yellowish paper.

Burroughs: Death threats? Like these?
Milli: ... Ah. You've been... getting them?
Burroughs: Yes.
Milli: ... Oh.

She frowns, then raises her sword again.

Milli: How about we compare the writing to yours?
Burroughs: And I would indulge you because...?
Milli: I have a big sword.
Burroughs: Actually, it's quite small.

Milli scowls.

--
The spectral figure points at Matthew.

Matthew: Ahhh... hello. Sorry. wrong room. Just going back downstairs. See my friends.

The figure does not move.

Matthew: ... Or not.

It points its ashen skeletal finger at the door.

Matthew: Ohh, the lock... did you see that?

It nods. He cringes.

Matthew: I got lost. Really bad amnesia. Ahh...

--
Burroughs: So, who are you really? Chase's people?
Milli: Well, not -
William: Yes.
Burroughs: As I told him, then. These attacks have started in the past few months, and when I received a warning that my life was "forfeit" I felt it prudent to study mystical security.

Matthew returns, looking unnerved.

Matthew: That's my bladder empty...
Milli: Good...?
Burroughs: Security like the warning spirit I have bound to my bedroom door.
Matthew: Er... yes. Very clever that. Very... surprising.
Burroughs: I imagine so.

Milli keeps her sword at the ready.

Milli: The evidence did all point to you.
Burroughs: I suppose it had to point to someone other than the actual culprit.
Milli: ... Thought you were evil, not our fault...
Burroughs: Anyway. What brings you back here, en masse?
Milli: A girl we know was threatened.
William: And it seems like the demons are working off the mailing list you were on.
Burroughs: I see. Now, if you have no further questions, I have a warning spirit to rebind.

Milli reluctantly puts her sword back in her bag and leads the group outside.

Burroughs: Bloody kids...

--
Lucian: Well, that was... different than I imagined.
Matthew: You must not have looked in the bedroom.

Simon and Andy look at them questioningly as they return.

Lucian: How do we know he's not lying?
William: What, you don't trust the word of an evil wizard?
Lucian: ... No?
Milli: Well, assume he is getting death threats as well. Why?
William: We're going to have to talk to Chase.
Milli: Oh... buggeration. Is there a way out of this?

--
Milli calls Escher in a bid to avoid talking to Chase.

Milli: What can you tell us about this Burroughs?
Escher: His record is sealed.
Milli: Why?
Escher: "Ongoing investigation. Contact Richard Chase, central office London".
Milli: You know how I feel about Chase.
Escher: You know how I feel about Chase...
Milli: Well, I'm here and I have my sword with me!
Escher: Milli.
Milli: ... Okay, fine, can we send Matthew? (sighs) okay, okay, I'll try not to make a mess. Or be too brassy. Or whatever the hell he says I am.

--
The Watchers' central office is a two-winged Georgian building.

Beyond the inner doors, a receptionist sits behind a desk with no markings to indicate the office's purpose.

Matthew ambles in cheerfully.

Milli slouches along behind the others, dragging her feet and looking very fifteen. Lucian backs up to keep pace with her.

Lucian: Is this really okay? He won't want to kill me?
Milli: No. Well, he might, but not because of this.

Matthew: Hello Mrs. Mills.
Mrs. Mills: Oh, hello Matthew. William... (peers) Millicent.
Matthew: Can we see Mr. Chase?
Mrs. Mills: Let me just call up and check.

--
In his office, larger than one man would seem to need, Chase arches an eyebrow as he listens.

Chase: Send them up.

--
Charlotte looks around curiously.

Charlotte: Looks like you could fit a Cabinet office in here.

Andy: Remember when I got the drop on one of Chase's boys with a rubbish bin? ... Maybe I should skip this meeting.
Milli: Oh, if you get to not come along, I get to.
William: Everybody's coming.
Matthew: Come on.
Simon: Is it okay if I stand at the back and glower?
Charlotte: I think that was Milli's idea.
Milli: I was gonna speak to him... if I have to...
Matthew: No violence.
Milli: I won't start anything.

--
Matthew ambles into Chase's office, William walks in stiffly with Charlotte sticking close, Andy strolls in, Lucian looks around somewhat warily, Milli brings up the rear.

Chase: Good morning all... Mister Grove, good to see you up and about.
William: Hm. Thanks.

Chase tilts his head slightly at Simon and Lucian.

Chase: Simon Williams? I'm sorry for your loss.

He glances at Lucian questioningly.

Matthew: An associate.
Lucian: Ah. Lucian Featherstonehaugh Weeks.

Chase nods slightly, then stands and shakes his hand.

Chase: Richard Chase. Please, sit.

Milli stands.

Andy: Y'know Chase, you still smell like a rubbish bin.
Charlotte: That wasn't even him.
Andy: Hung out with him too much.
Chase: ... How droll.

He looks over to Matthew with a relaxed smile.

Chase: Now, what can I do for you?
Milli: Who's attacking magicians?

Chase moves over to his filing cabinet, opens the second drawer and retrieves a thick folder. He turns and hands it to Matthew.

Chase: Violent attacks on mystics throughout the country, starting this summer. And death threats that have yet to be carried out.

Looking through the list, with annotations for 'threat' and 'attack', Matthew notices that some died unwarned and some have been warned but left alone.

Matthew: It looks like they're warning some people and attacking others...
Chase: This may be because of relative power levels in most cases, although some attacks could be opportunistic. Ms. Bartendale of the Devon Coven was the first to show us one of the warning notes, but so far reports no attacks outside of the line of duty.
Milli: So they're keeping them on edge and then hitting somewhere else.
Chase: Apparently so.

Matthew looks up.

Matthew: There's a cabal in Highgate?
Chase: Hm. Quite a significant one. All received their notes on the same day. Went into hiding.
Matthew: Who's this one with a star next to her name? Penelope Reynolds?

Chase pauses for a moment to consider his answer.

Chase: Something of an expert in warding. She called yesterday, actually, reported a disturbance.
William: Should we start there, then?
Chase: She didn't make it sound urgent.
Matthew: We'll try a few places in between, then. Can I copy some of these pages?
Chase: Certainly. You know the way.

Matthew heads off. Chase goes back to looking questioningly at Lucian. Lucian looks at the prints on the walls.

Milli: So. We talked to Nicolas Burroughs.
Chase: So I heard.
William: You're still keeping an eye on him.
Milli: You could have mentioned that he wasn't guilty.
Chase: This is an ongoing investigation covering the length and breadth of the country, Miss Blackhurst. Developments happen quite frequently...
Simon: Then why is this file closed?
Chase: It isn't. We keep the central file here, rather than updating everyone (glances at Milli) regardless of involvement.
Simon: What about suspects?
Chase: A list is emerging. None within your constituency thus far, but should we have enough evidence to take action you may be called on to assist in operations further afield. (dryly) Such as, say, in London...

Matthew returns and Chase unclasps his hands and leans back.

Chase: Did you get everything you needed?
Matthew: Yes, thank you.
Chase: Glad to hear it.
Charlotte: So we should probably... let you get back to work.
Chase: Ah, thank you, Miss Hamilton.

Charlotte nods slightly.

Milli: So you've learned about as much in three months as we have in a weekend.
Chase: Well, if you look through the file you might notice a few things you hadn't heard before.
Milli: We'll do that. And we're going to keep investigating.
Chase: I would expect nothing less.
Milli: Anything you can think that might help...
Chase: I'll be in touch.
Milli: (flatly) A pleasure as always.

She turns to go. Matthew makes an apologetic face on the group's behalf as they file out.

Lucian: Well, he wasn't like I was expecting.
Milli: Oh, he was exactly like I was expecting.
Matthew: Actually that went better than I expected.
Lucian: He seemed so... supercilious. It was like he didn't care at all.
Milli: Like I said.
Lucian: Nice suit, though...
Matthew: And I got to make some copies and take some notes.
William: So, check out some of these places?
Andy: After lunch.
William: It's only... Right you are.

The nearest available pub that serves lunch is the Spyglass.

Charlotte: Watcher pub?
William: Watcher pub.
Milli: The last thing I need is a bunch of old Watchers talking behind my back where I can actually hear them. "Oh, there's that Blackhurst girl." "That dead Blackhurst girl?"
Simon: Huh?
Lucian: Pardon?

Milli stops mid-rant and gawps.

Milli: Oh. Um. It's. Uh. A term. For. Uhmm. For someone that doesn't... respect their... elders.
Andy: (quickly) Yeah, but they have sausages on the menu!

Milli scowls and walks off more quickly, glancing back to see if the others are following her.

--
Andy looks unhappy as the group doorstep people on Matthew's list.

Milli: So, have you been receiving any death threats?
Witch: ...

--
William: Do you know what's happening?
Herbalist: No..

--
Sage: No...

--
Penelope: I do.

CUT!

Penelope, a small woman with black hair and glasses ushers the group inside her suburban house.

Penelope: Please, welcome, cross the threshold.
Matthew: Er... thank you.

They step inside.

Milli: Could we have gotten in otherwise?
Matthew: I don't think so...

The house is small, lived-in.

Milli: So how do you know all this?
Penelope: I backtracked from the source. It's the Highmore Club.

No-one seems to recognise the name, except Lucian, who looks puzzled.

Penelope: Their main building in Knightsbridge. Probably upstairs... Arrogant bastards weren't even trying to hide it...
Matthew: The source? Of the note?

In answer, Ms. Reynolds goes to the kitchen door and opens it.

Standing in a white circle is a four-armed demon with livid red and yellow skin, which lets out a guttural roar as it sees her and slams its taloned fists against a mystical barrier rising from the circle.

Matthew: ... Ah.

Lucian stares at it in shock.

William: This is the disturbance you said wasn't urgent?

Penelope shrugs.

Penelope: It's been in there since this morning.
Demon: Chhaaaaaaaa!
Milli: What did it say?
Matthew: I think it said "snarl".

Milli nods slightly and takes her eyes off the demon to look at Penelope.

Milli: Okay, uh, while we're here, do you want us to kill it? And, er, do we know how?
William: A clean cut from the throat to the navel...
Milli: Right.

Milli unsheathes her blade and slices downwards. The demon bellows, yellow light spills out, and then it bursts, showering debris over the encircled area.

Matthew watches, fascinated, as a chunk of the demon's chest drips slowly down the inside of the barrier spell.

Matthew: Good work.
Penelope: Thank you.

Milli: So, this Highmore Club. Never heard of them...
Penelope: Upscale, wealthy... the core members are mostly involved in professional sorcery. I believe a century ago it was still called the Hellfire Club.
Milli: Ah.

She nods and glances at the demon's remains as they bubble and hiss on the floor.

Lucian: My father's a standing member of the Garrick Club...
Milli: (suspiciously) Do they summon demons?
Lucian: (warily) Not as far as I know... but they are just down the street from this place... I might be able to get in.
Milli: I'm more up for fighting my way in.
Charlotte: Quelle surprise.
Milli: Okay then. I say we get in there and look for evidence. And then we cut their heads off. Is that a happy compromise?

Charlotte nods with a slight sigh.

Andy: Now we have a special cleaner to deal with demonic goo. Phone this number and ask for Mister Chase.
Penelope: Thank you.
Milli: Thank you, very much. You've been a great help.

They make their way outside.

William: So now we...
Milli: Go to the club.
William: We don't call the Council?
Milli: They'd want to go in en masse.
Charlotte: And that's... bad?
Milli: They'll probably be on their way anyway, so...
Matthew: So we should really call them.

--
As they depart, she picks up her phone and watches them from the window.

--
Chase: Ms. Reynolds. Did our people take care of your problem?
Penelope: Yes, they were here. So, that's him, is it... Hmm...

The Highmore Club is based in a large Georgian townhouse, surrounded by small grounds and a wrought iron fence.

Milli: Doesn't look like much.
William: Except that it's four storeys of Eighteenth Century architecture.
Charlotte: And grounds.
Simon: Point me at a window and give me something to break it with.
Matthew: Or there are doors...
Milli: I say door.
Lucian: Back door, I hope?
Simon: Put your tie back on.

Matthew takes Milli aside.

Matthew: Besides the obvious security, this is a magical society. They may be able to sense us coming in.
Milli: Then let's make some noise so they don't.

A large, heavily-built doorman with tan skin and no hair opens the double doors and steps out as Lucian approaches, trying to look casual.

Lucian: Ahhh, splendid. My good man. Weeks. From the Garrick.

He points off to the left, while on the right, Milli and William run through the gate towards the grounds.

And inside, someone opens his pitch black eyes and looks up sharply.

Watching from the hedge, Matthew blinks.

Matthew: That doorman isn't... He isn't human.

--
The doorman turns his dull grey eyes away from Lucian as he continues.

Lucian: So, you see, Lord Blenkley of...
Simon: Gloucester.
Lucian: Exactly, thank you.

The doorman's head swivels back towards Lucian as Simon joins him.

The doorman's voice is low and bassy.

Doorman: The club is closed until this evening. If you would like to return -
Lucian: (quickly) My God will you look at that!

Simon glances over to his left. The doorman doesn't.

Milli and William run for the door. The doorman looks over and raises his hands, fists clenching.

Simon punches him in the gut. He doesn't appear to notice the impact, as Simon clutches his hand in pain.

--
Matthew: Go!

Andy runs towards the door. Matthew looks out, raises a fist and slams it against the air.

--
Simon hits the doorman again, as Matthew's spell strikes him, and he topples over with a heavy thump.

Lucian: You're stronger than you look!

Milli runs past. William covers the door with his swordcane.

--
Matthew retrieves his phone.

Matthew: Er... Mister Chase? Hello. Ms. Reynolds was very helpful.
Chase: So I heard, she called... Where are - are you inside?
Matthew: Not personally...

He looks up as the loading doors of an unmarked van open behind him and armed men charge out.

Smith: Morning Matthew!
Matthew: ... Hello...

--
Milli points her crossbow through the cloakroom hatch.

Milli: Nobody in here.

She backs up and swings her crossbow around to point up the double staircase - as the door flies open behind her.

Lucian dives into the cloakroom and hides behind a hat stand.

Collins: Miss Blackhurst. Mighta known.

The Watcher Elite special forces, half a dozen irritable-looking men in black fatigues with dartguns, tasers and folding-stock crossbows, run in through the doorway, splitting up their numbers and covering every side of the foyer.

Milli: Yeah... hi. The ground floor's clear and I wanna look upstairs. Oh, but check the basement?
Collins: ... Be my guest. Do call down if you find anything.

Milli races up the stairs.

Collins: Bloody girl...
Weatherby: I'm beginning to like her.
Collins: Shut up.

One of the backup squad looks in the cloakroom. Lucian comes out with his hands up.

Matthew: No, no, it's fine, nothing to be afraid of, just the Council's special forces.

--
Milli looks in the upstairs lounge. She cautiously approaches an antique globe, opens it, and nods when she finds that it contains drinks.

And then the door of an administrative office flies open and a middle-aged man with black eyes strides out.

Sorcerer: You are not welcome on our premises, young lady. Not unaccompanied or uninvited - and certainly not in such casual attire.
Milli: I'm not welcome most places I go. I try not to let it get to me.

He keeps coming as she raises her sword, and the air thickens around his hands as he grasps at it. She pauses at the stairs.

He stops and looks down, as Matthew steps up to the foot of the stairs.

Their gazes meet - both of them with jet black eyes.

Then the sorcerer raises his hand, and Matthew is flung backwards by an unseen strike.

Sorcerer: Seems only fitting after what he did to our doorman.

Crossbow bolts miss their mark as he advances. He raises a hand towards Milli... then frowns.

She looks down at the ring on her thumb.

Milli: You know, one of my least favourite things in the world?

She sweeps low and kicks the sorcerer's legs out from under him.

As he lands, he raises a hand, crackling with power, and she grabs the balustrade and swings around on it, kicking him in the face and sending him tumbling down the stairs.

Milli: Being pushed around.

As the sorcerer lands, William covers him with his sword, Collins smacks him with a taser. And then Simon kicks him.

Milli runs through the open door and bursts into his study - and looks up as a note appears from thin air with a flash and floats down to the desk, angled for her to see.

"YOUR LIVES ARE FORFEIT"

Milli: ... Oops?

William: Sorry.)
Jamie: Dammit, I want zombies!
Craig: You all heard him...
Cat: Aaargh!

(Milli: No-one here has died and come back.)
Craig: Butter wouldn't melt in her mouth...

(Matthew looks over the upstairs landing, looks in the bedroom, turns around - and finds himself facing a transparent figure swathed in a dark grey robe and hood, as it slowly points an accusing finger at him.)
Stuart: (deadpan) Sure, I'll just go and investigate alone. Nothing ever happens to me when I go off on my own.

(Penelope: Yes, they were here. So, that's him, is it... Hmm.)

I approve! Nice light episode. Good to see Simon and Lucian being housebroken, so to speak.

(Don't hit me, guys.)

Lucian: Pardon?

Milli stops mid-rant and gawps.

Milli: Oh. Um. It's. Uh. A term. For. Uhmm. For someone that doesn't... respect their... elders.

Simon: My sister was killed for no reason by a demon who was sent to kill someone else.

Natalie in Namibia.

Lucian: So, demons are real, and you fight them?

Chase handing Matthew a file.

Chase: Someone is systematically targeting those using magic beneficially.

A dark-haired woman, Penelope Reynolds, greeting the group at her door.

Milli: Do you know who's doing this?
Penelope: I do. The Highmore Club... I believe a century ago it was still called the Hellfire Club.

Milli kicking a sorcerer down the stairs, bursting into his study, and looking up a note as it appears from thin air...

"YOUR LIVES ARE FORFEIT"

Milli: ... Oops?

We open in front of a cave overlooking the Namibian desert.

Azubuike: This is where it began. Where one girl was chosen. Taken from her village, chained to the earth. Always remember this. The walls that we built to hold back the night... are built on bone.

Natalie takes off her sunglasses and gives him a hard stare.

Natalie: And this affects me how?
Azubuike: Deeper than you can know, Natalie Derby-Moore. Even now, without a seer to light their way, your friends storm ahead into unknown dangers...

--

Cut to Milli kicking a door open.

A demon looks up from the fridge of the kitchen she just burst into, then opens both of his mouths to snarl at her.

Milli: Hello! This isn't my house!

The demon drops his cans of beer and charges.

Milli shoots the fridge door and it swings shut, catching him on the leg and spinning him around violently.

A crossbow bolt thuds into the demon's chest from behind her and she looks around.

Milli: Hey!
Simon: This is you being stealthy?

She ignores him, loads her own crossbow and carries on inside.

As she's about to boot another door in, Matthew pushes ahead, puts a finger on the door handle, and it opens quietly.

Five assorted monsters look up from a game of poker.

Milli fires and a vampire explodes, dropping his cards. Two of the other monsters look at his hand while the other two leap into action.

Matthew blasts one across the room, Simon charges, Andy glances at Simon and decides to weigh in with his baseball bat.

William leans against a wall, unsheathes his swordcane and cuts a fleeing vampire's head off.

Charlotte shouts over from behind a crossbow.

Charlotte: I thought you were supposed to be taking things easy!

William shrugs, and winces.

Milli backs away as a purple clawed demon implodes, then opens the wicker basket sitting in the middle of the disrupted table.

Half a dozen kittens look up at her.

Milli: There are kittens.
Simon: They play for kittens?
Andy: Well, they're very... (stops himself) sweet. I mean, look... (cringes)
Matthew: Live meals.

Simon looks at Matthew suspiciously. Andy looks at the ceiling innocently.

Matthew: We should take them to an animal sanctuary.
Andy: But they're so... cute and fluffy. Can't I keep one?

Everyone except Simon visibly suppresses a no.

Matthew: Well, ah, Andy... do you know what a responsibility a kitten is?

A small black kitten with a white patch on his throat climbs up to look at Milli.

Andy: It can stay with you. Your flat's half empty anyway.

Milli turns to look at Andy, and her trigger finger tightens. He puts his hands up.

Andy: Or I suppose Lucian could take one...

--

Cut to Lucian, running for his life from two figures in black, seemingly from an observer's point of view.

The group return to the office.

Escher: Lucian Weeks called.
Milli: Ohhh no.

Charlotte half smiles as Milli's shoulders slump.

Charlotte: Are we avoiding him again?
Milli: Yes. If we don't he talks to us.
William: It's not like he knows anything.
Milli: Look, as long as he doesn't start shouting "vampires are gonna kill us all!" at the freshers' Mingle it's fine...
Simon: Maybe a personal chat would help.
Milli: You'd think so, wouldn't you?
Matthew: Maybe he finds your intimidating.
Milli: That is what I'm going for.
Matthew: Or not intimidating in the right way? Maybe it's...
Charlotte: Look, he's not gay. Trust me.
Milli: Ohhh. William, he's been eyeing up your girlfriend!
William: ...
Matthew: Hi Lucian!

Lucian enters and sets down a copy of the Bumper Fun Book Of Unexplained Phenomena.

Lucian: Evening all. How are you all?
Matthew: Not bad.
Lucian: Up to much?
Milli: No.
Andy: Poker.
Lucian: More of a Bridge man myself.
Andy: Cos we broke up a poker game earlier.
Lucian: ... What?
Andy: Don't suppose you want a kitten?
Lucian: Well, I... what?
Milli: Anyway. Lots to do. Term's still new and all. Thanks for dropping by -
Lucian: Oh, I was wondering if you might want to come for a quiet drink? A nice quiet drink.
Milli: Oh, we're not really the quiet sort...

--

And we cut to Matthew looking through the papers copied from the file Chase gave him earlier, frowning.

Milli's gaze follows him. Simon looks sidelong at her and returns to reading the book Lucian left behind.

Simon: This is... not very helpful.
William: Glad to hear it.

Then the door opens and Natalie enters.

Natalie: Hi, I'm... who's that?

Milli goes over and gives her a light hug, which she returns happily. Matthew starts to stand, then sits back down. Simon looks at her curiously.

She goes over to William and Charlotte, putting an arm around each of them.

Natalie: How are you?
William: Oh, up and about. How was Namibia?
Natalie: Great. Fascinating. Kind of... dramatic.
Milli: And headachy?
Natalie: Well, I had one on the flight, but that was just the air pressure.
Milli: I mean... did you find that...
Matthew: Interesting?
Natalie: ... Hi Matthew.

Matthew looks back at his papers shyly.

Natalie glances at Simon.

Natalie: I'll tell you later, okay? I still have all my bags in the cab. I found this great bazaar in Marrakech...
Escher: Simon knows.

Natalie glances at Andy. He shakes his head and mouths "not that bit". She nods.

Natalie: Oh. Well. Um. I saw this guy being chased through the streets. Tatty greatcoat, blue scarf...

Milli thumps her head against the desk.

Natalie furrows her brow as Milli looks up and sighs deeply.

Natalie: So, you know him?
Milli: Did he die? In the vision?
Natalie: It looked like he might.
Milli: (sighs) Well, I guess we have to save him.
Matthew: We should certainly warn him.
Milli: Can't we just keep him safe from a distance?
Natalie: Does he know too?

She glances at Andy again. He shakes his head again.

Milli: Well, not everything. He doesn't know I died that one time.
William: But we had to let him in on some of the big secrets. Best not to keep them from him.
Charlotte: Hm.
Natalie: Well, do we tell him I...?
Mathew: Maybe that there was a... report...

Simon looks at Natalie warily and murmurs to Andy, sitting next to him.

Simon: So, she sees things before they happen?
Andy: Uh, yeah, for a while now.
Simon: What is she, a witch?
Andy: I don't... think so...

Natalie glances over at them.

Natalie: So we trust...
Milli: We trust Simon.
Natalie: And you don't trust Lucian?
Milli: Not as such, no...
Natalie: Enough to tell him he's in danger?
Milli: Or let him hang around.
Natalie: Look, I just... remember how it was with Samuel.

William and Charlotte frown.

Milli: It's just... telling him means telling him...

She sighs and goes to get her jacket.

--

Lucian waves the group over to his table by the bar at the Brody.

Natalie: Lucian, right?
Lucian: What have you heard?

He looks suspiciously at Milli.

Natalie: Oh, just that the Weeks family have been in the area a good while. Natalie Derby-Moore.
Lucian: Of the Aylesbury Derby-Moores?
Natalie: (beams) Yes, actually!
Lucian: Are you a...?
Matthew: (quietly) She's a Watcher.
Natalie: Yes, I am.

Matthew looks at her questioningly.

Natalie: Long standing within the family.
Lucian: Well, it's a pleasure to meet you.
Natalie: You're in danger.
Lucian: Oh.
Milli: Only a little. Mildly. Mild peril.
Natalie: I see life-threatening danger.
Milli: Mildly life-threatening.
Lucian: So is this how you... rate levels of danger?
Natalie: Do you know how many mystical forces we have to deal with?
Lucian: So it's mystical danger? (gulps) Great!
Natalie: Possibly...

Matthew mutters an aside to Milli.

Matthew: At least he hasn't tried to run away yet.
Lucian: One question... It's not the Brooks boys, is it?
Milli: ... Who?
Lucian: (flatly) Marvellous. Never mind.

--

The group, apart from William and Charlotte, accompany Lucian to his flat.

Matthew: We just want to see if there's anyone waiting inside.
Milli: To kill you.
Lucian: That isn't very reassuring.

Milli shrugs.

Natalie: Wouldn't want to neglect your sacred duty, would you?

Milli scowls. Natalie turns back to Lucian with a reassuring smile.

Natalie: It'll be fine. Don't worry.

He looks reassured, then glances at Milli and looks less so.

Lucian: It just seems that certain people's views on protection include knocking the protected party unconscious.

Milli duly ignores him.

Milli: Andy. Anyone in there?
Andy: Not right now, no.
Natalie: Good. So we can research what this means.
Matthew: I think the best person to protect Lucian would be...
Milli: Does the other person get to stop him talking?
Lucian: I may need to tidy my flat.
Milli: How about we take shifts? How long is he going to be in mild peril?
Natalie: I dunno. It was at night...
Milli: Perfect! I could take the night shift. While he's asleep. And you can stay up with... Simon!
Simon: (looks up) Hm?
Milli: Simon's really getting kickass with the crossbow.
Lucian: How do you know these people?
Natalie: Family connections...

--

Next morning, Natalie follows the sound of thumping to the practice room, and finds Milli irritably throwing knives at a target.

Natalie: So... how have you been?
Milli: ... I've been better.
Natalie: How... how do you want to deal with this?
Milli: I suppose we need to let Simon see the "Watching" side of Watching.

She pulls the throwing knives out, paces around, puts her hands on her hips, then sets them down on the bench.

Natalie: Matthew's there at the moment. Looking at his records. So, this Simon, why's he here?
Milli: His sister was killed by a demon. He looked into it, he was sent up here. Don't really know why he's here in particular.
Natalie: It seems like he has a lot of pent-up anger...

Milli looks sidelong at her, then lowers her eyes.

Milli: I... think it's more that he wants to get over it. At least I understand him.
Natalie: Hm.
Milli: Lucian is just weird.
Natalie: Oh?

She retrieves the knives, and throws one of them.

Milli: He's attached himself to us for no reason. He was looking into magical weaponsmithing -

And another.

Milli: - things people shouldn't be looking into... he was reading the book Mister Escher ordered through his shop -
Natalie: He owns a shop?
Milli: He works in a shop.

And the third.

Milli: Paying for his PhD., he says. Definitely something dodgy about him.
Natalie: Matthew seems not to mind him so much.
Milli: Yes, well.

She yanks the knives out of the target.

Natalie: Um... How is he?
Milli: Missing you, a lot.
Natalie: I've missed him too.

Milli arches an eyebrow slightly.

Natalie: Anyway, this Lucian, if he is dangerous -
Milli: I can kill him? (beams)
Natalie: ... We shouldn't leave him alone with Matthew.
Milli: That's why I wanted to send Simon. And maybe Andy.
Natalie: And neither of them know about Andy?
Milli: He figured it was better to let them get to know him first. (pauses) Of course, that's what he thought with us, too. And William nearly killed him...
Natalie: ... Sooo, Simon's been here a while, then?
Milli: Just a few weeks. Training.
Natalie: Oh, I had a chance to do some training in Namibia. And...

Milli watches as she opens her bag and hands her a small box.

Natalie: Got you this.

Milli takes out a small woven silver bracelet.

Natalie: From the village where the first Slayer was born. Well, the village on the site of a bit of it.
Milli: Oh. Cool. Thank you.

She smiles.

Natalie: So, how's everyone else?
Milli: Oh, Andy's Andy. Mister Escher... I think he feels guilty. Um. William's... I know it hurts, but he doesn't show it. Charlotte hates me, and she does let it show. Which I suppose is fair enough...

She sighs.

Natalie nods glumly. Then blinks and shakes her head.

--

Flashes of Lucian running past our POV.

--

Milli: What? What happened?
Natalie: I saw a bit more. Lucian being chased by two men.
Milli: Definitely men?
Natalie: One of them was at least, and... look. I don't know if I should interfere.
Milli: What do you mean?
Natalie: The last thing I saw like this was how... how Jake died.

She swallows hard.

Natalie: Maybe I'm not meant to change things. Like...

Milli scowls.

Milli: No. That can't be it. I just don't accept that.

She heads for the door.

--

Lucian: So, ah, how do you rate demons? Is there a... lethality index?

William and Matthew exchange glances.

Matthew: Actually we tend to code by distinguishing features, although we do try and cross-reference by killing methodologies...

Milli and Natalie rush in, and skid to a halt.

Milli: Umm, William...
William: What?
Milli: Natalie has a headache.
Natalie: So I need to go out for...
Matthew: Some fresh air?
Natalie: Exactly. And, uh...

Milli looks at William intently and nods to the door.

William: I should... in my capacity as medical officer...
Lucian: Really?
William: Erm.

Charlotte tuts as William limps after them.

He leans heavily against the workbench in the training room.

William: So, what's going on?
Natalie: Jake made this look easy...
Milli: She had a vision of a possible future. So we can do something about it.

Natalie nods slightly, unsure.

William: So, what do we do?
Milli: We have to try and catch them.
William: Keep our guard up?
Milli: No. We should be subtle about this.
Natalie: We could have one obvious person... (looks at Milli)
Milli: Some sort of tracking device?
William: Sure. I have a few of those kicking around from... (glances at Natalie) tracking people before. (cringes and changes the subject) Maybe in the lining of his coat?
Natalie: (nods) He was wearing it.
Milli: There you go. Get the others. (pauses) Not him. (pauses) Obviously.

--

Milli: Matthew, have you found out anything about the Brooks Brothers?
Matthew: Yes. Apparently they're art fences and loansharks.
Milli: (quietly) I knew it.
Natalie: Seems that they scare him more than demons.
Milli: You haven't seen him around demons. (shrugs) And I don't think he knows enough about what's out there to really fear it.
Simon: He seems to be doing a decent job there.

--

Lucian steps out of the history supervisory building men's room, and pauses as he hears voices.

--

Milli: Urg. Anyway. Who wants first watch?
Charlotte: We could.
William: Sure.
Charlotte: Where is he, anyway?
Milli: Isn't he in the office?

She hurries next door, and finds the office deserted. She sighs and gazes skywards.

--

The group stand around a map of Cambridgeshire.

William: We could try the family house.
Natalie: My car's still in storage.
Andy: I'll try and pick up his scent... trouble is he kinda smells like books...
Simon: What do we do when we find him?
Milli: Well, apparently we can't trust him on his own.
Natalie: I could take him back to mine. Except I don't have a "mine". I didn't get a room for this year set up yet.

Matthew looks like he's in two minds about saying something, then keeps quiet.

Milli: You can crash with me.
Natalie: But... where would I keep all my clothes?

Milli looks as if she disapproves of this concern on every level.

Milli: Anyway. I'll look in his shop.
Simon: I'll check his flat.

Matthew looks up from the map, tracing his finger slowly over the marks for central Cambridge.

Matthew: Excuse me.

Natalie glances at his back as he leaves.

--

Lucian sits in the usual booth, and looks up as Matthew approaches, alone.

Lucian: Ah. Well. Public enough?
Matthew: The whole point is that you're not alone.
Lucian: I'm not.
Matthew: Not in some ways...

He looks at the book Lucian sets down.

Matthew: You're very interested in the island thing.
Lucian: Yes. The practices and ideas of an isolated people that get more eccentric the more they isolate themselves...
Matthew: Hm.
Lucian: It's a topic. (smiles faintly) Tea? Coffee? Beer?
Matthew: Tea.
Natalie: Earl Grey with lemon?

Matthew looks up as Natalie joins them.

Matthew: Jif will do.
Natalie: No it will not.
Lucian: So, you were discussing our sleeping arrangements for my protective custody?
Matthew: Something like that.
Lucian: I don't think it would do to intrude on the young lady's rest the day after a long flight.

Matthew glances at Natalie. She shrugs slightly and takes out her phone as she stands up.

Natalie: Hi. Yes, found him. We'll camp out at Lucian's.

Milli: Right. Try and keep him from wandering off.

Natalie: Until later, then.

--

Natalie and Matthew walk on either side of Lucian, each looking a different way, warily, and also avoiding looking at each other.

Lucian: So... do you have a magic sword as well?
Natalie: Hm? Oh, no.

She glances at Matthew. He appears to be watching a tree as they pass it.

--

Natalie sits on Lucian's bed. Matthew stands by the bedroom door.

Natalie: So, uh, will one of you stay awake till reinforcements arrive?
Matthew: Yeah.
Natalie: Okay... Um... Night, then.
Matthew: ... Goodnight.

She closes the bedroom door. He nods and steps back, towards the living room.

Lucian: So, here we are.
Matthew: Hm.
Lucian: To protect me from...?
Matthew: Various... different... things...?
Lucian: Like what, exactly?
Matthew: The list is rather long.
Lucian: Yes, but you have some sort of specific information. About me, sometime soon.
Matthew: Well... I should... go and call my father. About something to do with research.
Lucian: I... see.

Natalie comes back out, holding a toothbrush.

Natalie: Hi.
Lucian: Oh. Hello. I was about to suggest putting on some music. But if we're being too loud...
Natalie: No, I... can't really sleep anyway.
Lucian: Danger?
Natalie: Airport food.
Lucian: Oh. Well. Anyway. There is danger. Apparently. And you've narrowed it down to a few hours...? Between you and me it's all rather suspicious.
Natalie: Well, the Council normally don't find out about attacks like this in advance...
Lucian: And how did they, this time?
Natalie: There may have been some supernatural involvement.
Lucian: Oh. Well. I have seen a "demon". That time at Simon's house.
Natalie: With Simon?
Lucian: At Simon's.
Natalie: Oh, okay, you don't need to...
Lucian: Sorry. Just that some people here seem to think I bat for the other team.
Natalie: You play cricket?
Lucian: That I'm gay.
Natalie: Well, that's... really your business, isn't it?

Matthew runs back inside.

Matthew: Hahaa!
Natalie: What?
Lucian: Good news from your dad?
Matthew: I met my mother!
