Per Toady's announcement and a small sampling of the many articles about it!

I've been playing DF for a very long time now, have given Toady some money in the past, and I plan on buy it on Steam the moment it's available. Already have it wishlisted.

This is exciting. I'm excited! :D

Hey everybody! We mentioned a big announcement on the development log, and here it is: Dwarf Fortress is coming to Steam and itch with a new tile set, and generally enhanced graphics and audio. We'll continue updating and releasing the free ASCII version on the Bay 12 web page as Dwarf Fortress Classic.
Here it is on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/975370/Dwarf_Fortress/

And Itch.io: https://kitfoxgames.itch.io/dwarf-fortress

I'm excited! Twenty bucks for an upgraded DF sounds like a great deal, especially if the UI gets tweaked.

I don't know if I'll bother to play it, but twenty bucks is worth the fun I had with the game when I did play it, especially if the creator is having health issues.

The new graphics will be by modders Mayday and Meph.

Meph is talking about modular sprites on the DF reddit. Here's an image he posted:

In several of the mock-ups, the dwarves have different colored beards. 😍 They are trying to give Forgotten Beasts the same treatment.

The tileset is nice, but if it actually gets a new UI I might well be on board. DF is one of those games I've wanted to like, where I just couldn't get through the terrible interface and opaque learning curve.
