Much like the very complex tubes and spinning bits of the engine, the elevator seems to be some odd hybrid of technological ages if compared to Earth and earth-like stretches of Shadow. The exposed panel seems to have several spinning chambers that fill with the fluid of the Abzu and then empty it again; Midna and Cara have been adjusting the various dials and so forth that seem to regulate the flow of the fluid—and thus the speed of spinning of the chambers.

In terms of controls, there is a relatively simple lever that one can slide up from its current position at the bottom to either a middle or top position, but it doesn't do anything, and seems to be connected to whatever actually hauls the elevator about by way of the exposed panel. Following the panel's connections in the other direction, towards the cables. There is clearly not a hydraulic type mechanism beneath it nor an obvious motor unless a signal is being sent up the whole length of the cabal to draw it up. However the top piece looks quite a bit like the visible parts of the engine where the lightning arcs originate from.

Generally, in fact, the panel looks to take its cues in design and layout from the engine.

"Or at least there will have been natives," Trevian says. "Things happen."
“Yeah, that’s always a possibility,” Adam concedes. “Don’t get a post-apocalypse vibe from this place though. But even if that’s the case they’ll at least have left books and documents behind.”

"Maybe we should go and try to find some then. I am curious to what they think or thought about this machinery and so forth." Nicholas says.
"Well, if someone gets this damn elevator going sure, or we can hike it," Midna says, clearly invested in making the damn thing go at this point.
Nicholas walks over to where Midna and Cara are and looks at what has them so dismayed. "Aren't elevators supposed to be simple to control? This just doesn't seem right. We have a working shadow-lock but not an elevator."
“Well, elevators aren’t always simple,” Adam replies. “In some places and times they were at least tricky enough to require trained operators.”

He saunters over to the elevator to check out Midna’s efforts to get it to work.

Midna has mostly been futzing with seeing how things make the elevator change—she is nervously looking at the top of the elevator everytime she does something, which seems fairly sensible given the arcs of power from the engine. It is also clear in examining the area that the walkway is older than the elevator—it seems to be part of the wall with no obvious seams between the two—while the elevator is made of a different material and is taking advantage of the way that the walkway sometimes bends away from the wall to create a gap that the elevator cables and car fill.

While walking up would be doable for those with the blood of Amber, and all the vigor it implies, the walkway is very long, very steep, and without rails.

"It might help if we examine the Engine and compare its components to the elevator's." Adam suggests. "Since the mechanisms here were clearly derived from the Engine, examining the source of inspiration should help with deciphering its products."

Adam looks at what Midna has managed to do so far with the elevator's innards and then goes to take a look at the Engine to follow his own advice.

Ryan hung about awkwardly. He'd did his bit of learning across the Shadows, but it wasn't like he'd put the time into engineering. Maybe he would have to.

Trevian closes his eyes and listens to the engine and the elevator. Is there a rhythm that could be synchronized by manipulating the elevator controls?

The engine is an absolute beast and part of it must extend far below—presumably breaching into the Abzu to draw forth its substance. Many of its parts move in slow rotations as the pressure of that fluid shifts. As one spirals around it, it becomes clear that certain parts of it are mirrored in the elevator—and could be made to align to how the engine is currently configured. It is, in fact, like someone peeled the surface of the engine and shrunk it down to make the control panel of the elevator.

Listening to the rhythm points in the same direction—the elevator's flow sounds like a faster, quieter version of the long thrumming of the elevator but currently out of synch. As if the elevator bit has turned to the wrong page of music.

"Try listening," Trevian suggests to Midna and Cara. "Maybe if you synchronize the rhythm with the engine?"

Cara and Midna both do. While Midna looks more serene about it, and approaching understanding, Cara seems to be bopping along. Midna says, "I'm not sure I'd try to change the elevator based on sound alone, but the engine must have the solution and the sound will give away if we're off."

As the cousins remain near the engine, there is a feel not unlike the power that builds up around the Pattern or when resisting a Trump call, and presumably around the Logrus itself as well. It is harder to detect and seems dulled by the way in which Shadow contains the Pattern, but it is there, the promise of something potent that might kill you to master. Something not wholly achievable with the Pattern alone. It is also clear from the time spent so far that time in this shadow is roughly synchronized to Amber. The rhythm of the Pattern's power makes that clear—it is also the same underlying rhythm of the engine, suggesting that someone knowledgeable enough in the operation of the strange machines here could alter the flow of time relative to the rest of shadow even without being the master of the realm.

Ryan, what part of Shadow that your father took you to makes you uneasy? Do you know if it is in the stretch under the sway of his Pattern or broader Shadow?

Nicholas, did you go into the reflection grotto near Rebma? Can you remember what you saw in its waters?

Adam, what have you seen in a particular shadow that you haven't yet anywhere else in Shadow?

Trevian, what's the worst injury you received and who did you have to turn to for help with it?

As Nicholas reflects on the machine he flashes back to his time in the reflection grotto near Rebma. It was a calm visit but he remembers little except a feeling of peace while the waves washed first one way then the other. There was a sense of oneness and a feeling that everything made sense. He vaguely thinks he might have saw images of his cousins and a single star shining in the sky above.
