One of the things that I've never understood has been the lack of a Bestiary for GURPS 4e. No longer! It's excellent to see the Nordland Bestiary on Kickstarter, and looking like it is well on it's way to funding. I just hope everyone who has ever talked about wanting a book like this show up and we can get it to 240 pages.

Anybody else excited to see this finally come to pass, even if it isn't from SJGames themselves?

Yes, I’ve backed this project already. D DouglasCole does great Kickstarters - very reliable and a high quality product. His Nordlond series are a really detailed not-Viking world with settlements, cultures and religion addresses in detail.

This does add a lot of ‘instant use’ value for GURPS in a fantasy context, and by using it in combination with 3e materials (where there were several books of critters) you should be able to quickly convert a lot of other materials, too

And successful third-party stuff for GURPS must help crack open the possibility of other third party products in different genres?

It would be great to see someone else use GURPS for another genre.

And I 100% agree on his Kickstarters. Plus, unlike a lot of Kickstarters that go dark for months at a time, he gives you consistent updates on the state of the project.

IIRC, there have been hints he's working on something Action-themed.

Yes, an action-based game called Mission X. It's designed to be a stand-alone game like the Dungeon Fantasy RPG, but with way more guns and aliens.

It's a big lift, though, as you can't really do a book like that SMALL, so I have to watch out carefully for the size of my audience.

Sounds awesome. Are you going to try for a standalone hardcover?

Stand-alone game, yes.

Hardcover ... I suspect I may follow the model of the DFRPG, with a chargen book, a missions book, a tech book, a setting book, and a sample adventure.

But I'll have to see. Those would work best sold in a slipcase (because books in a slipcase are still "books," and not "stuff," according to harmonization codes, which matters for international shipping). A single book, with the five sections above treated as chapters, would also work.

Ultimately, I won't know what it's going to be until I write it. And the better my projects do, and the larger the audience, going IN to a game like this, the more risks I can take beforehand.

Thanks for the kind words.

Just speaking to "other third-party products" the best way to consider other publishers (or become one yourself) is to establish a long track record of quality content, ability to develop and deliver product in the game industry, and work with the SJGames staff at all levels politely and productively.

I wrote for them for over a decade in Pyramid, ran and participated in well over a dozen playtests, and published three books in the 5e space before going to Phil at GenCon 50 and saying "please?" and getting the answer "we'll see." It was a reasonable stretch of time before that turned to "yes."

So I counsel patience, and much toil.

No bulletproof aliens! Unless you want to play GURPS UNIT🙃
