As the snake collapses, Kimball fires again, bursting its head like a ripe melon. And again, and again, and again, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, until the shotgun clicks uselessly when he pulls the trigger.

He stares tiredly at the battered corpse of the snake, still twitching; in his mind he sees Higgins and Quezada twitching as the life leaves their bodies. Reversing his grip on the shotgun, he begins slamming the butt into the snake's corpse, pounding it over and over.

OOC: SAN 68/55; failure. SAN loss 3; new SAN 52

I figure that's an appropriate reaction given the SAN loss.

Up at the scaffolds the three troopers there can see that only Sergeant Summers and Private Kimball are still standing. Kimball seems to have lost his senses and is pounding away at something on the ground amongst the rocks and boulders. A cloud of ghostly gunsmoke dissipates as the last of the light vanishes...

"Kimball." Summers' voice is quiet and reassuring. "Kimball. Come along, let's fall back to the perimeter."

He placed a light hand on Kimball's shoulder. "C'mon, son."

He was bone tired. This had been...enough.

Kimball stops his useless attack, leaning on the gore-spattered shotgun for a moment, then nods. "Yeah, okay," he says, following Summers. "Whatever you say, Sarge. Goddamn snake. Goddamn crazy Indian."

"Yeah. Let's get a fire and make it through the night."

Up on the scaffold Scott's attention is fixed on the area the woman fainted in, his rifle trained there.

Several hours later.

It's now night time and the surviving Troopers have a roaring fire going where the burial scaffolds stood. To one side the bodies of Tea Square, Higgins, Thockmorton and Quezada are lain out side by side and covered by blankets. They and the troops' horses had been collected over the last few hours. Luckily the animals hadn't strayed far and had come when called for.

The skeletons had turned to dust when destroyed and the dead Indian still lay where he had fallen.

Sat close to the fire is Lupi Escobar and her son Joachim, who still has in his hand the strange snakeskin rattle. The woman had accepted food but refused to talk about her ordeal. A tough woman by the looks of it, though for one so young her white streaked hair seemed odd.

Joachim seemed untouched both mentally and physically and boy does he love that rattle!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…..Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr…….

OOC: Kimball gains +1d3+1 san for killing the snake.
All of you gain +1d3 san for rescuing Lupi and +1d3 San for rescuing Joachim.

Summers needs to roll for san loss on seeing the snake 0/1d4 and for seeing Higgins and Quezada die 0/1d6.

The revolutionary leader is still hanging above the blood drenched stone statue.

There's a few things that can still be investigated and then we can wrap this up.

Thibodeau

OOC: San Gain: 4 total, which tops me off.

After aiding the rest of the troop with setting up camp, Thibodeau takes a lantern and heads back toward the petroglyphs, making painstaking copies of them in his notebook.

"Not alone, son," Summers orders, and then, "if you must go...Kimball. You okay to go with him?"
