(image thread) Fantasy Art with black men and women...

(...and I don't mean Drow!)

I'm looking for high quality fantasy art images that depict African skin tones on human or humanoid fantasy characters, to use as visual reference material for my rpg campaign (not for a published product, but rather just to show players and say "and he looks like this", etc.).

I've got any number of caucasian, oriental and arabic themed fantasy pictures to work with, but a quick search of my collected fantasy art showed me very little in the way of black skinned people.

Images appreciated! Thanks!

Pathfinder's iconic characters have depictions of African looking people that I think you mean, though I can't be sure thre is the whole North African and Sub-Saharan Africa deal and US/UK meanings of white and black often leave me clueless:

These are absolutely perfect! Thanks!

Anyone got any more?

Would also be grateful if anybody has any art that is more by the way of themed pieces, as well as individual characters, in the style of the Everway cards (not the art style, but rather the sort of interesting art where you can ask chargen questions like "Where does the road lead?" / "What is in the box?")

Also, pictures of the above characters which aren't on the default floaty white background would be good. The way I'm presenting art pieces in game tends to be on playing-card sized pictures, and the ones I've used so far have all been thin in white space, but rather have detailed painted backgrounds.

Oh, also art themed along the lines of freedom or rebellion would be welcome.

Its horrible cliched, I know, but my longstanding fantasy game has the African-cultural equivalent being the plucky tribal rebels against a predominantly white and oriental Empire.

If I were going to rewrite the setting now, I'd probably change this, but its too long running a campaign to be uprooted now, so I'm looking instead to add more depth and interest to the "Rebels of the Lion Spear" rather than excising them entirely from my game's canon.

I dunno if it's high quality, but Wotc published it - one I did a few years back for a 3e Psionics book (edit - Complete Psionic), and I'm still fond of this illo, as it was the first thing I ever did for D&D:

Oh that's definitely high quality, as far as I'm concerned. Absolutely high quality.

I'm not being super selective (though even if I was, I'd still pick the art above as great art), but rather just looking for professional level art rather than the amateurish stuff you find with a google or elfwood search.

Thanks for the pic! Shall definitely use it! Keep em coming please!

Having dissed google though, it did just find me this one:

Oh ta!

If I recall correctly I made that one during the time I was reading a lot about El Cid and the Reconquista. This idea of medieval Europe as being only inhabited by white folks isolated from everyone else has always bugged me, since it's basically untrue. I found stuff surrounding gold route up from Africa into Spain really inspiring for adventure ideas.

Blah blah sorry, totally off topic.

Given the Teferi image, I suppose you might have already looked into art from Magic the Gathering's Mirage and Visions sets, and (to a lesser extent) Weatherlight. Mirage took place in a 'fantasy africa' and thus, lots of dark-skinned folks.

Art for Guild Wars: Nightfall would be similarly useful, since it too takes place in a fantasy Africa.

But since I mentioned Magic, I'll point out some of the ones I personally like, although not all of 'em are as big as I'd like.

I think there is a fair amount of fantasy art-work featuring black/African people that is less than flattering, because it often casts them in this tribal, African motiff which seems not far-removed from the stereotypical primitive witch-doctor/jungle/savannah image.

Actually this is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for!

As I said, I must apologise that I'm actually quite keen on the african tribal motif for my game, as it fits the setting! I know that hideously colonialist of me, but for this game I'm running, it fits.
