I also have my suspicions that the permanent La Terreur in Galt is being kept going by the Grey Gardeners, and that the lot of them are actually a cult dedicated to Charon, the Horseman of Death.

I mean...Grey being Charon's color, and guillotines that trap the souls of their victims. Just makes sense, really.
That actually reminds me of a campaign idea I had where the PC's are hired to escort the new potential ruler of Galt to the capital, and he seems like this buffoonish Prince Wu like upper class twit who Chairman Goss plans on feeding to the angry mobs. But then it turns out he's secretly a priest to the four horsemen, and he slaughters Goss and his flunkies and establishes martial law, and makes plans to invade Andoras, and the PC's have to help the Gray Gardeners depose him.

But related, its not the Gardeners keeping things going, its Goss. He never gets statted, but Inner Sea Intrigue establishes Goss is a Chaotic evil 13th level mesmerist. (Mesmerist being a Pathfinder class that specializes in mind control spells and buffing and debuffing). So its pretty clear he's using his power to keep the mobs all mobby and killing anyone who tries to establish order.

Well, it took some doing, but I've managed to off the Stag Lord. Sadly, lots of innocent kobolds had to die because of Tartuccio. I'm still open for "best ending" advice. ^^'
Also, Octavia's now high level enough that her next default build level is in arcane trickster. Should I let her do so? I'm thinking of making her take another wizard level.
And Tristian, I like you, but I foresee a lot of future frustrations stemming from your wading into melee without armor.

Give Tristian a crossbow. As for Octavia, she makes a pretty good Trickster

From a thread on companion builds I found on gog: "Octavia is one of the hardest characters to build for before her default build is as close to perfect as you can really get. The auto-level will give her Accomplished Sneak Attacker and then feed directly into Arcane Trickster until it maxes it out, then return to Wizard levels. Almost every build you'll find anywhere conforms to this standard because there's not really anything better. So differences tend to be superficial in most casts."

...Huh. Noted!

Party's reached level 5, I think we've done all the quests in the area (though those boggarts in the Southwest are surprisingly tough)... Time to hit Restov to get a barony. ...So, if I understand this correctly, the kingdom is on the verge of civil war due to one half (led by the "Swordlords") wanting to claim independence from the other half (led by the aristocracy), and they're hoping I can become a third party that can act as mediator kingmaker? *begins hesitating between envoys*

The Swordlords want a "independent" ally/vassal in their powerplay with the aristocracy basically

EDIT and you are not the only team they sent out to grab land

Two hundred years ago, the bitter enemy kingdoms of Rostland (south, ruled from Restov) and Issia (north) were conquered by a foreign warlord and his red dragon allies and forced to amalgamate into Brevoy. The warlord's descendants have ruled ever since.

Five years ago, the entire ruling family vanished into thin air, and things have been getting tense.

I see.
Well, I don't want an avoidable bloody civil war, I don't want unjust rule, and I dislike splitting nations into several smaller nations. Hm...

If it helps at all, since you're playing a paladin and would logically have Detect-Evil-O-Vision...

None of the envoys have actual known alignments (because they aren't recruitable characters and you don't get to see stats sheets), but:

Kassil Aldori (the Half-orc swordlord, Jamandi's stepson) is honorable, generally tries to help people, and is probably either LN or LG. He also pushes to side with the Swordlords (and help them gain their independence).

Shandra Mervey (the older woman who the Natala Surtova offers as an envoy) is a bit of a schemer. Somewhere between LN or LE. She'll push to side with the nobles in keeping Brevoy whole, but is very much in favor of noble power at the expense of others.

Lander (the younger guy who won't give you his family name) is the neutral option between the two factions, but he's also a bit reckless and definitely CN.
