Or if they have to defend an immobile or very slow moving target from it.
Or rescue someone tied to the altar and about to be imprisoned in the wicker man.

Or destroy it to disrupt some sort of magical ritual.

Or recover something from the body of a grapple victim before it burns to ash.

Lots of reasons.

And it has that nasty golem magical immunity, so wizards just aren't going to be as effective. Still effective, but, not as effective.

Hmm, how about giving the wicker man a paralysis attack or those captured are automatically paralyzed? That would up the fear factor.

That's cool.

Another idea is to give it the ability to produce a thick blanket of smoke while burning. That allows a creature that size to hide in combat and anyone engulfed by the smoke may not be coming out...

Something like dazed would be better. Nauseated is a very powerful condition. If the wicker man did cause nausea, its CR should be bumped by two (or one if the DC is weakened).
