During a break in march Kurt raised an eyebrow at Hamon and asked, "Were we expecting company?"
"Nothing from the navy side." Hamon halts for a moment, calls over the trooper with the backpack radio, and hails Greenyear. "Chef, did you call up any naval reinforcement? I'm not aware we're due anything."

"No, not at all..."

Greenyear's voice is heavy with suspicion, and after some spicy English, he says he'll get back to you.

****

After what seems like an eternity, Greenyear is back on the horn.
"Ask your Spook - it's some SDECE assholes"

First, Hamon calls up the flotilla, still moored along the river.

"Messieurs, we have new additions to the fleet. Keep a close eye on them, and be on your guard."

He passes the mike back to the radio man, and turns to the others.

"Are we expecting any more SDECE?" he asks, a note of accusation in his voice.

Even Fayolle does not know. But it would not surprise him if some desk jockey back in Paris messed up... Or someone up the chain is too curious for their own good.

Eventually the radio chatters back to life and the Lieutenant aboard the Reine calls in saying they have a cluster on their hands.

There is some controversy about chain of command. The ships are under the command of Lieutenant Jaureguy, one of Hamon's classmates at the Ecole. The SDECE man is Henri D'Arcy-Gautier, a man known to Fayolle.

D'Arcy insists on speaking to Fayolle and no one else.

Hamon accedes to D'Arcy's demand, and withdraws just out of easy earshot, where he calls Jaureguy separately.

"Mon brave, what's happened on your journey upriver? What orders did that man give you, if any?"

If Greenyear isn't happy with this situation, Hamon certainly isn't happy.

Fayolle accepts the radio handset and nods at Hamon as he departs.

Kurt motioned his subordinates over and quietly spoke with them, "Keep the men on alert. There's some bullshit politics going on and I don't want them being caught unaware."

The Legion men chuckle. Macken in particular remembers 1940.
"Now I see," is all he says.

Foitl shrugs, and seems embarrassed. The Austrian caporal passes orders to Amadou and his grenadiers who nod grimly.

Meanwhile, the vanguard reports a trail; one disguised from above, and clearly man made. It looks like it could lead to the summit of the hill the column is advancing on.

Guy confers with Brian and Chanida, they agree to not cross this track and move back.
The intention is to parallel it 100m south.

Guy will check in with his radio relay team on the boats.
"Marat, is ther some kind of clusterfuck going back at the river?"
