What sort of locations would you find in a space station that's a trade hub?

The first one is inspired by the huge garbage bin full of confiscated whiskey that I saw rapidly filling up going through Narita airport a few years back.

1. Hangar 13: a transport hangar that has been under "renovations" for the past decade. Much of the confiscated contraband that is officially incinerated is taken here instead, which allows Hangar 13 to maintain the best-stocked bar in the station and many other pieces of proscribed merchandise can be obtained here if you have the right contacts with station security to be allowed in the door.

2) Dyson's Donuts

This is one of those extremely tacky food slots found in every mall, arcade, promenade deck, and lobby of seemingly every public building, across known space.

Dyson's products come in over 80 flavors, all of which are baked daily and some hourly. Besides the classics of plain, sugar creme, chocolate, and brava nut, there are some exotic ones that appeal to any variety of species including sprice grass glaze, seaweed, and salted. They also sell some passable Klah and usually some local hot beverage or three (tea and coffee on Sol III).

Dyson's donuts are not really donuts in the 20th century sense of the word. They are not ring shaped, they are what we would think of as donut holes. These round little treats are popular and sold in packs of four, eight, or twelve (with one for luck). Bringing a Pachinko bucket of several dozen to the office or home will ensure that everyone loves you.

So you are possibly wondering why the donuts at Dyson's is this way. Well after the discovery of one, everyone knew that Dyson's were spheres. They just continued the trend. Now a century later.....

3) Hoonoovex's Methanarium

A hermetically sealed, intensively refrigerated cafe and lounge, created to allow methane breathers a chance to shed their enviro-suits and relax in an environment unsullied by the sweltering, foul-smelling, and dangerously corrosive atmospheres favored by oxygen-breathers, or 'Owetoos' as they are sometimes referred to in the Methanogenic community.

The proprietor, one Hoonoovex of Belshad, is a gruff but sympathetic aggregation of arachnopedal cryopolyps who purportedly brews a mean butyllithium martini.

It's rumoured that the hyperdon of the local Alsafian Mafia is a regular, and keeps a private back room on reserve- a rumour which Hoonoovex steadfastly refuses to either confirm or deny

4) Murnifurn's Emporium

Murnifurn is a shifty hexapod who sells dodgy consignment goods at bargain basement prices. Where it gets these things is a subject of conjecture, and there's no point asking because it has a story about how every piece of merchandise on the shelves came straight from the dowager queen of Endros III's bedchamber via an unlikely co-incidence involving a space pirate raid, a travelling star-zoo and a clandestine meeting between the crown princess and her illicit lover in the palace' plasma conduits.

Needless to say, any item that catches your eye should be thoroughly examined before purchase, in case it breeds exponentially, summons cosmic forces or contains a brain parasite that tries to take over your body.

4) Hub Bank
What's a trade site without a place that makes loans on ships or cargos, holds accounts and issues credit cards (or equivalent) plus changes currency? Drafts and money orders issued for all systems/governments in the sector, plus for larger entities further off. Safe deposit boxes in a variety of atmospheres. Guarunteed secure transactions via subspace. Acts as a branch for various multi-system financial entities. Pay you fees and taxes here!

6) Asyrin's Pharmasite

A chain of small storefronts (with huge back rooms) that carry "branded" health chemicals for minor ailments (coughs, allergies, hang overs, small cuts), beauty products (shampoo, scents, skin and fur lotions), personal effects (brushes, combs, pins, polishes), and some "everyday items" for a variety of species and cultures near by. They may not have exactly what you want, but it will be close. They also carry a huge supply of snack and recreational (candy) foods and drinks. It tends to be a place to spend your spare credits on the little things to make your travels more comfortble.

For those that can digest this sort of thng, they also sell novelty cool treats (mochi balls) that were a popular kid's treat in the sector. They have them as part of their package of things, to help bring back your childhood (or have the one you never had).

There are four of these on this station. There is usually one in every station or starport with regular stopovers. The same mega-corp (Dondi Chema) owns outlets tailored for local markets on almost every habitable planet and general ship in this sector and the next two over.

Ths place is mostly for cholor and chrome for the setting. However, players with minor physical disads could find relief with the stock here. And it could be a quet to get the hang over medication while roaring drunk and get back to the ship before you get left behind..... because you were supposed to be on the ship and not drinking).

Dutchie's
What started as a trade-factor's warehouse and office has morphed over years and economic pressure into a small business center, speakeasy and hostel. Dirck "Dutchie" Laangstraet began as a trader - a middleman buying venture cargo and selling it on to other shippers, while also renting warehouse space to trans-shippers involved in three and four-way trade-swap deals. The warehousing put him in touch with lots of small ship operators who usually need a place to meet clients, store argo, and bunk down while their ships are in for refit, so eventually Dutchie converted warehouse cubic into a taproom with meeting spaces, some bunkrooms, a holo-suite for conferences (or just enjoying a little "beach time" without leaving the station), a laundry, etc etc. Some of these enterprises he owns outright, others he just backs a contractor who provides the service, but spacers who travel through this sector all know that you can leave messages, get mail, expect a clean warm bed, a meal and a friendly welcome at Dutchie's. Unless you're one of the limited number of folks who've been banned for various reasons.

8) Agor's

Agor's is a restaurant for most blue protein folks (humans and similar). The restaurant is two deck slots wide (each deck slot on the promenade being shoebox proportioned). These two dozen cafe tables are waited on by some very well designed synthetics that appear organic. The food is conventional (which would make it like Chinese food), good tasting, lightly spiced by most standards, and seemingly fresh. The Klah is superb and the various alchohols are light and fruity.

What makes Agor's special is that it seems like you are "outdoors" in a natural setting, sitting on a patio adjacent to some trees and a creek. This isn't some holo (that always flicker or disappears if you are wearing fairly standard polarized lenses). No, this is proper imagineering. Detailed trees that seem real with moss on them (they appear to be in early fall to Human view, with a riot of color). There are subtle insect sounds and the sound of rustling leaves in the background. The vents control the breeze just perfectly and their is an ionizer and moisturizer attached to make it "seem natural". The sky is painted with subtle lighting allowing the sky to change from day to evening over the course of six hours.

It allows for a natural set without the heat and impending energy of holo stuff. This makes it a great change from most space experiences.

Since the breaking of fast (eating together) is a symbol of contract in many cultures, a lot of important people are often found having meals here. (If the meal does not go well, the deal often goes to the flusher... so you can imagine the bribes the wait staff might get).

All of this makes Agor (appearing as a general humanoid of middle years) a person of note on the station.

Some highlights....
Agor's is part owner of the station's "new" agro pods, where a variety of hydroponic vegetables, soya, and grains are grown. (As opposed to the old agropods which grow algea and vatstuff that spacers normally eat.)

Agor is the big wheel in the food system here at the hub. Food is just under air and heat in importance. One should not underestimate it. He has contacts on all sides and can arrange for just about anything given enough time. And we are not talking just about food. Agor usually stays well on this side of the blue (law) line.

Note: This is done today... two examples which come up are the Grand Canal Shoppes in Las Vegas and Grand Bayou Restaurant in Disneyland.

9) Cadle's Stationary Store and Halamark Dealer.

The fine art of writing has not been lost. It has just become an art, not a craft. Still proper paper, ink blocks/sticks/dips, pens and burshes can be had. Cadle's has been in business for nearly 600 years handling the needs for Paper and Ink. It is the "Foundation of Tradition," it says so above the door. In addition to supplies, sold by a very knowledgeable and attentive staff, they provide artistic scribing in a number of languages and styles. Many Important Files are made tangible through "Traditional Hands" here.

Also, if you want a document converted to text but don't want the conversation recorded, they can do that.

Off to the side is what most people want when they enter this stuffy and formal environment. It is the Halamark section.

Most mail transmitted by the Imperial Postal Service is actually kept in digital format, then sent by the x-boat. It is quite expensive to spend a physical package, but it is still an option.

For the longest times, thin folded cards were an option for physically sending packages. However, costs increase. Even these tiny cards are prohibitive.

e-cards are seen as impersonal still. There is a solution.

The voucher allowed one to buy a card, with a hand written note from you, and have it delivered by conventional mail systems away. Halamark provides thousands of cards to choose from including the historical tissue cards that fold so thin. When the local Halamark dealer receives the digital note, they print a physical card and press printed the message on the card. That is then posted by planetary or system postal providers.

Note there is a Halamark provider on just about every planet with a starport (included blasted dirt field starports).

Now this station is different, as they have actual blank cards printed out ready for purchase. Not fabbed after your request, but they keep the selection in physical stock so you can "feel" it.

10) Med Bay

The station's official medical bay has state of the art equipment provided by the Company, and available for use by any of the staff signed up to the Company insurance policy and anyone else as a per-service paid transaction. It's staffed by two dozen surgeons and medicae, and three dozen nursing staff, and can handle almost anything.

Almost anything, that is, except Centauran Sarcophagic Fever, which has left it with a literal skeleton staff and resulted in the entire Med-Bay being quarantined. So far the Company hasn't let on that the station has had an outbreak of this killer bug, as media exposure would kill the base's thriving trade faster than the bug killed poor Nurse Hamswell when she had a sharps injury with an infected needle. They can't keep things hushed up forever though, and over the three weeks since the incident corporate minds have been desperately trying to think of reasons they can justify the Med Bay being closed permanently without effecting future trade.

The entire section is locked down, but an enterprising store owner has put an advert-poster for Asyrin's Pharmacite on the sealing bulkhead, redirected the sick and frail to their shops...
