Other words for "Professional Adventurer"

I'm looking for a catchier word for "Professional Adventurer", you know, a free-lance independent contractor that travels around doing "what needs to be done".

Examples so far:

Freelancer
Contractor (too corporate)
Mercenary (too military)
Factotum (although this captures the "do whatever" aspect, it implies specific employment)
condottiere (again, too military)
hireling (too subservient)

Game terms I've come across:
Traveller
Edgerunner
Shadowrunner
Adventurer

I'm looking for a cool futuristic term to describe a freelance contractor in the far future, roaming the Galaxy doing whatever they're hired to do. You know, like Traveller PCs.

Although it's military-ish, I like the sound of "Irregulars". It has the rag-tag implication I'm looking for.

"Procons", Short for Professional Contractors. Maybe? It sounds futuristic.

"Floater", also has that futuristic ring, but bery fatalistic.

"Drifter", doesn't have that professional expert connotation.

"Journeyman", a little archaic, too tied with the old RPG?

Gentlemen of Unusual Means?(for a more discreet type)
STOs? (Specialized Tactics Operatives)

Persons of Interest? (Authorities seldom take kindly to murder & pillage)

Premodern
Sellswords?
Freeblades?
Hedgers? (from Hedge Knights, Hedge Wizards, etc)
Roadwights? (doomed to walk the roads with great power and no home)
