IC Poisoned Honey: A Requiem for the Gods Sidequest

Humming a bit curiously, Madeline pulls her flute out and begins to play a tune, one she'd heard traveling in a swamp once along the gulf coast of her home continent. Perhaps this would be appealing to the frog people?

If it didn't seem like this was getting them anywhere else, Madeline would look for the best clear path away from them, and start to slowly edge that way.

When Madeline pulls out her flute the frog tenses, but relaxes once the instrument is visible. As the snow leopard plays, a few more frog-folk - one with brilliant green-and-yellow coloration, another red with blue arms and legs - emerge from hiding to listen and stare. The first, the blue frog with the spear, sinks back onto his/her haunches and waits passively as the music continues.

Although you hear no sound, the frogs' throats seem to be pulsing in time with the melody.

Madeline smiles at this, and once the song begins to come to an end she switches to something a bit more upbeat, her hips beginning to sway as she begins to dance just a bit to the music. It's been a while since she's had such an attentive, if silent audience, and well, as long as they weren't trying to stab them with their spears...

Having secured water, Rikku and Aress begin making their way south, looking for their companions. Again, you are stuck by the signs of small-scale labor, as if someone is moving, cleaning, and scavenging small objects around this town. You see no sign of intelligent life; nothing beyond a few birds, a snake, and the ever-present insects.

You soon come upon a strange tableau: Madeline facing away from you, while Anna hovers near her, clearly wary. Facing them both is a tiny, two-foot-tall bright blue frog person armed with a long, slender spear.
Aress makes her way back to Madeline, the signs showing someone - or several someones - working the territory are worrying, having not seen anyone so far. She looks at Rikku to see if the martial artist has the same concerns.

When they finally get to Madeline, they find her in a confrontation with a short blue frog wielding a spear. Not long after, two more appear, similarly armed. Aress wonders how many others there are, and looks around to see if there are any others hidden in the ruins. Her hand creeps slowly to her knife.

Then Madeline starts performing, playing a tune and dancing. And to Aress' surprise and confusion, the frogs start following. All she could do is stare at the group in disbelief, before forcing herself to look around to see if there's anyone else here.

The frogs do not react appreciably to Madeline and Anna's dancing, though they continue to watch intently. More appear, creeping out of hiding; there must be a dozen or more tiny frog-folk. Several are armed with spears, tiny bows, and other weapons.

As Rikku and Aress draw near, the frogs become warier, watching these newcomers carefully. Two or three level their spears warningly, but they do not seem hostile - only cautious. More frogs are visible here and there, atop a nearby pile of rubble, peering around an overturned cart.

As Madeline comes to the end of her song, the frogs' throats inflate faster and faster, making high-pitched cheep-cheep sounds.

Anna is curious, VERY curious if these frogs are tribal people or highly evolved animals... she thinks, testing all her base knowledge of animals to their limits for something that could help with these strange little beings...

Rikku is unsure what to make of this situation. After exchanging glances with Aress, she slowly approaches Madeline and Anna, her hands up and open to show she's unarmed, and meant no harm.

"So, who are your new little friends?" Rikku asks.

The frogs are clearly sapient beings, not just cunning wildlife; they're using tools, behaving in an organized manner, and communicating after a fashion. They're small and frail enough that Anna could easily take one on in physical combat even without magic, but their brightly-colored skin suggests that they're probably poisonous. It occurs to Anna that if they are, those spears could be poisoned as easily as wiping them across the wielder's skin.

If you want to befriend them, how are you actually interacting with them?

One of the spear-wielding frogs levels its weapon at Rikku, but does not otherwise take action. Another, on top of a building, has a bow in hand; the arrow is nocked but not drawn.

The first frog - it seems to be a leader of sorts - glances over at the newcomers, then back to Madeline. Again the frog's throat swells, and it makes a questioning sound.

"these are our friends..." anna says, smiling gently as she lowers her hands in a posture of submission... "we are friends. we just needed some supplies, and safe passage onward..." she says, slowly pronouncing each syllable in a calm level tone.
