I like it more than the first one, personally, but it probably is easier; when you can move in 3 dimensions you have more options to avoid attacks.
I could see someone who is more of a hardcore twitch gamer than me liking the first one more.
One of the things I liked about the 1st one (and a lot of roguelikes) is stacking wierd effects on top of each other. This one definitely has that in spades, though I don't know that it has quite as many items as the first one, yet. Still, the crazy stacking combinations you can get can be really satisfying.
