For the better part of a decade now, I have been collecting the fanfiction recommendation made in various venues across the web (mainly the creative sections of, making list of links with those and I have been left with a mildly titanic thread of recs that I call the Big List, which at this point includes several thousand works.

Now, the qualities that make something worth recommending are very much in the eye of the beholder, so there is plenty of stuff in here that I haven't read at all, plenty of stuff that I wouldn't recommend if I had read it and probably some stuff that shouldn't be there, in spite of my best efforts to filter the chaff.

Still, it is a resource that some people find useful and which I think may be of interest to the people here. Thus, this repost.

In a different note and citing my own comments in the opening post of the thread I am mirroring here, I've only read a very small fraction of all this stuff and some of the stories listed below may contain NSFW content that is not properly labeled and so on. So if you find anything funny while browsing this thread, by all means point it to me and I'll deal with whatever comes up as soon as possible (or ask the staff to handle it if I no longer can or whatever is suitable).

The North's Economic Development Plan
By Race For The Iron Throne
Of all of the regions of Westeros we’ve planned for, the North is perhaps the most difficult case we’ve deal with, next to Dorne (which had a much better export profile).
As the Lord of Winterfell, my main difficulties are that the North is severely underpopulated, and has extreme weather conditions that exacerbate the northerly climate’s limits on agricultural productivity.
So how do we overcome these problems…ideally, before winter comes?
Mentioned by Wavelet.
I don't think everything in here is realistic (certainly not starting in 283) but there's plenty of things which would work mixed in with the questionable ideas.

A Better Fate
By ColdHandsLuke
Beginning two years before A Game of Thrones, Jon Snow is spurred in a different direction. This brings on new adversities for him, as well as the chance for a better fate for the Starks.
Contains spoilers through the entire series, but most happen away from the written story.
Recommended by GiantMonkeyMan & templar627.
Basically Jon Snow manages to pursuade Cat that the best way to get him out of Winterfell would be to squire him to her brother. It's a great idea for a AU divergence, in my opinion, but I'm just waiting for the War of Five Kings to start with Jon as one of Robb's bannerman however the latest chapters make me think that this might be headed in a completely different direction. Worth the read.

So a tentative rec for A Different Kraken on It's a neat idea, essentially where a more grounded Theon arrives to Pyke to find his father on his death bed and becomes the Iron King, going through with his plan to join Robb in fighting the Lanisters. It's got a lot of problems with spelling and grammar if that drives you nuts I'd stay away, though recent chapters are improving. It's also refreshingly not a Stark/Greyjoy wank as Robb is pulled in too many directions and the Lanisters and the Tyrells are still allies.

A Saga Of Dreams - The Cacophony Of Banners
By scholar
The first wave of ISOTs will be from A Song of Ice and Fire, and it is one of the most extensive waves that I will be making in a long time. Having recently be listening to the audiobooks for the series and having seen the ridiculous amount of popularity this series now holds in I thought that this would be the better choice to make the first move into this kind of project rather than a selection of roman provinces, a fractured Chinese realm, a patchwork of European states, Alexander, or an Egypt. One of the ISOTs is not part of Westeros, but I felt as though Dragons were a necessity for this particular wave of ISOTs given their connection to the magics there and yet I did not want it to become an immediate focus. As such Meereen has been brought here, but the city, its conqueror-queen, and the three dragons are far from anything of note, for this volume at least.
The Cacophony of Banners will have two different forms of updates. One will be abstract histories as one might find in most timelines, these will serve to quicken the pace between the other form of updates and allow for conclusion and summary. The other will be POV chapters reminiscent of the series itself. I will do my best to do right by the characters in these chapters and I ask that if I get something wrong in them that you tell me right away so that I can fix it. I cannot say how many will receive POV chapters, or how many chapters a POV character will receive. While poor on my part, it may be that a single POV chapter will exist for one of the eleven different locations brought with this wave, while another region may have almost a dozen. The length of these chapters may vary wildly as well, but I will try to maintain consistency. Lastly, this wave will be done when it is done. It may be over September 1 or March 15, I cannot say for certain. I do plan on it being finished before the new year though.
The Cacophony of Banners will be around 50 years long.

Bastard's Blood

If Gary Jennings wrote Game of Thrones... We follow the loves and adventures of Jon, A young boy, growing up in a world. A tale of life in Westeros with the cruel morality, religious fervour, ageless greed, and exotic brutalities of 17th century Mexico.
I am drawing heavily upon the writings Gary Jennings to illustrate this world in in the magnificence it deserves. If heaven exists, Gary Jennings has most assuredly earned a spot next to God himself. RIP

A challenge for the Throneland LJ community. Take one of the Game of Thrones characters, and write at least 100 words about them as a member of a different family! Is Tyrion a Stark? Is Ned a Targaryen? How about Viserys Lannister? Arya Frey? Cersei Baelish?

The killing of Mad King Aerys Targaryen by person or persons unknown worked out well for virtually everyone, including Jaime Lannister. Disgraced for failing his king (if only they knew) and tasked with protecting no-longer-a-Princess Rhaenys Targaryen until she can be wed to Robert’s eldest legitimate son (whenever Robert gets around to producing one), Jaime must go north with the Starks (a prickly, judgmental lot) to look after her. Cold, bored, and guarding a five-year-old, Jaime might yet learn to be a truly honourable knight – but even far from King's Landing and Cersei, his dangerous secrets might catch up with him. Worse, his aren't the only dangerous secrets in the North…

Part 1 in a series of 3. Probable general spoilers for A Dance with Dragons.
Arya Stark rejects the nameless, anonymous lifestyle of the Faceless Men and returns to Westeros four years into the long winter. Cut off from the North by driving snows and treacherous winter seas, she must wait out the worst of the season in the Riverlands in the company of the Brotherhood without Banners. Bandits and broken men and the hardships of winter are not the only enemies, for Arya has plenty of her own demons she must battle. As a child, she lost almost everything, even her own identity; as a young woman, she is still haunted by those losses. Even so, she has a preternatural pack of wolves, a distant brother, and her past companion Gendry to help her on her way to finding herself again.

I'd like to recommend Five, which is a one-shot based on Joanna Lannister surviving Tyrion's birth. In particular, I recommend it because Joanna isn't the cliched personification of sweetness and light that such fics are prone to propping up, but rather someone that one can picture as Tywin's beloved spouse. Otherwise, Tywin is still Tywin, Tyrion has a happier fate, Jaime is still a dumbass, and Cersei is . . . well, Cersei.

Let's Play: Hear Me Roar!
By Victor227
Welcome to my second AAR! Starting off in the year 281 AL, it will be running from the perspective of Jaime Lannister, with the twist in history of Tywin Lannister dying and leaving him the lordship of Casterly Rock and the Westerlands rather than a white cloak and service to the Mad King.
Due to starting off at a non-bookmarked point with historical characters, in the interest of full disclosure I did have to make a few adjustments to the file to fit things in terms of traits and base stats (Aerys being a tyrant before doing anything tyrannical, adjusting education traits to ensure that brutes like Gregor and Sandor Clegane and such don't wind up with diplomatic educations due to the lack of education flags, killing Tywin right off at the start, those sorts of things)
And of course, as always, there will be minor spoilers in the content for those that haven't quite caught up with the show/books, and probably more major ones in any conversation that goes on in-thread, so read at your own peril! Likewise, Jaime's choice in partners is rather affixed at this point, so for the foreseeable future there will likely be a fair bit of incest and such as well (mind you, there's tons of that in CKII as is).

Maid, Whore Or Myth: Brienne Of Tarth And Female Agency In Westeros On The Eve Of The Second Targaryen Conquest
By Miss_M
Five hundred years after Daenerys Targaryen retook the throne of her ancestors, the War of the Five Kings is remembered primarily as the prelude to her conquest of Westeros. What happens to living history and its main actors once they have been reduced to schoolbook trivia, obscured by the fog of ages, distilled by scrupulous scholarly analysis? Why, they live on in papers given at academic conferences, of course!
Here, a maester in 813 AL discusses what the available knowledge on the so-called Maid of Tarth says about the Westerosi society of canon – and about her own distant-post-canon world.

Winter came for all of them; for all the cripples and bastards and broken things. But the tides had turned in the War of the Five Kings and a Stark once again sat upon the Throne of Winter as the Dragon Queen sat on hers. The remaining Starks, once scattered by the winds, came back to Winterfell to rebuild their fallen home and prepare for the true winter that was coming from Beyond the Wall. All the remaining wolves returned, all but one. Winter came for everyone, but one blacksmith went in search of winter instead – to find himself and to find the last missing Stark. This is a story about a crippled King, a bastard boy, a broken Queen and all the other damaged things that songs and stories and men couldn’t put back together again.

Okay, this was an idea that hit me during the day and I thought might be something fun to discuss.
Terry the bored ASB decided that he'd like to dabble with the A Song of Ice and Fire universe a bit. He decides that the Stark family has gotten a bum wrap and would like to give them the opportunity to fix their mistakes. He chooses the remaining Starks left alive at the end of the most recent book, A Dance with Dragons, and transfers their minds back into the bodies they were at the beginning of A Game of Thrones. Terry decides that Starks that have died and been or will be resurrected don't count--so no Lady Stonehart in Catelyn or a revived Jon in Jon showing up (presuming that happens). Only the Starks that have not died themselves, which leaves Sansa, Arya/No One, Bran, and Rickon.
Terry waves the hand of disbelief that they all eventually figure out that what's occurred to them has also occurred to their fellow youngest siblings but not the entire family. What could the four youngest Starks do to try and save their family and keep the pack together?
Recommended by Murazor & Wavelet.
If you want a summary, essentially, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon from the end of the fifth book are transported into the bodies of their beginning of the series selves. At first, they have no clue what's going on, but eventually they realize what has happened and start trying to change the future. Unfortunately, they're kids who don't really understand the consequences of their actions properly, so, while the plot of ASOIAF almost immediately derails, it is not yet clear at all that the result of their actions will be any better than the original series for either the Starks or the Seven Kingdoms as a whole. The characters are written realistically, the author's writing is strong, and the plot has developed in interesting and believable ways. I can't say much more than that without spoiling the story.

The Iron Gauntlet And The Silk Glove I Skyfall Is Where We Start
'At least Stannis won't laugh at Renly if the boy tries to follow him around when he's a bit older and takes a tumble on the flagstones. It's not much, not much at all, but perhaps it's enough to be going on with.'
Robert never loved his brothers, but this is not a story about Robert. This is about Stannis, and Renly, and glimpses of how they might have been different, had they let themselves love each other as brothers usually do.
(Title from Adele's 'Skyfall', mostly because I was tickled pink by the stags at Skyfall Manor in the newest Bond film.)
The Iron Gauntlet And The Silk Glove II Bargaining

Chapter two, in which the deal is followed through on, is now posted.
The Iron Gauntlet And The Silk Glove III Sweet Summer Children
There are four years between the finding of direwolves and the King's visit to Winterfell. Four years for children to grow and learn, and for adults to play their games, and perhaps learn as well. These last years of summer are more important than they know.
Chapter 12: There's much Robin Arryn hates about his illness, but the colors that follow sounds through the air is something he's learned to love.
The Iron Gauntlet And The Silk Glove IV Dragons On The Cliffside
Brightflame's heir and a daughter of Blackfyre, hidden away in the least of the Free Cities, their children and children's children biding their time until they can take what is theirs.

The Iron Gauntlet And The Silk Glove VII We'll Ride (In The Gathering Storm)
When Jon Arryn dies, King Robert rides for Winterfell as secrets brew on Dragonstone and in the Eyrie. Meanwhile, the last Targaryens gain not one but four sworn shields as Daenerys prepares to wed Khal Drogo, and three of them carry secrets behind their Valyrian eyes.

The Iron Gauntlet and the Silk Glove is really good. nice long story based on a few nails. The big one is that Jon Snow is the son of Ned and Ashara Dayne, and Ashara lives and ends up married to Stannis to help Robert secure Dorne. It's got a bit of everything and really feels organic.

There are a shit ton of Lyanna Lives story, most of them are done poorly, this one is actually well done, well thought out and seem canonical. It fits. My main pet peeves for Lyanna Lives is that everything is honky dory with her and she get a free pass for everything. I highly recommend this fic.

The Many Sons Of Winter
By CaekDaemon
The slumbering direwolf of the North has rested peacefully for nearly three hundred years, content to rest and build as they always had since the days of King Torrhen Stark, who had surrendered his crown to Aegon the Conqueror in the name of peace and fealty. His heart broken by the loss of the kingdom passed down through the ages, his bastard brother takes him on a trek around the North to survey the realm he rules now as Lord Paramount...and in a blizzard, they find something that forever changes the history of not just the North, but the entire world.
But nothing can sleep forever.
When Prince Rhaegar Targaryen snatched Lyanna Stark from the city of Winterfell, the direwolf stirred from its slumber and was enraged by the death of its liege lord and his son and heir...the Andal realms of the South learnt that the North was not the sparsely populated backwater they told their children about, but one of the foremost powers in Westeros.
What if the North had a population on par with the Reach, brought about by having a reliable and consistent supply of food?

The Open Way updated to Chapter 26. I'm still not sure what I think about the fic, but it is a somewhat interesting departure from the normal scheme of things. The latest chapter ended with Rhaegar, who seemed like a lunatic incompetent in the opening chapters, kill Tywin, Kevan, Varys, and Oberyn in a single night. Lots of craziness.
Regarding the North, Ned is a brother of the Night's Watch, Robb is Lord Paramount, and Benjen is his regent while he is a hostage at King's Landing. Regarding the Stormlands, Stannis is Lord Paramount, while Renly is a hostage at Highgarden. Regarding the Riverlands, Edmure is Lord Paramount, but both he and Catelyn have been married to Freys, who are serving as regents until Edmure comes of age. Meanwhile, Brynden is running with a band of outlaws in the Riverlands and seems to have recovered Lysa at some point. Regarding the Vale, I'm not sure what happened, but Yohn Royce seems to be in control.

The Pact Of Ice & Fire

Recommended by Ezra.
Creticus, at the end of the Dance of the Dragons, Cregan's armies clashss against the Baratheon army
Cregan wins and instead of being Hand for a day, becomes hand for six Years and gets a Targaryen bride, which is Rhaena fulfilling the Pact promised by Rhaenyra's son, which makes the regent wars not happen.
Fast foward years later, when Rickon Stark dies near the final months of the Young Dragon's Invasion of Dorne. In which Droman decides to switch up some things, Barthagon Stark, who in canon is Cregan Stark's son, is switched to Cregan's Grandson.
Bathagon is then married to Eleana Targaryen, who Daeron promised to in response to Rickon's death.
Now, she still has Alyn Velayarons bastards. Here's a thing, during Barth's reign as Master of Law in Aegon the Unworthy' reign. When Eleana gives birth to a third child, it has very Targaryen features, which starts a rumour that Eleana had sex with Aegon and gave birth to a bastard, Droman keeps this vague.
Barth gets pissed and is ready to strangle Aegon, but is stopped in the hallway by Aemon thr Dragonknight, which by the way are total bro's with each other. They duel and are only stopped by their men pulling them back fron each other.
Barth quits as Master of Laws and goes back North.
Now since the rebellion is brewing both sides now want to win the support of the North. Barth doesn't like Daemon for being Aegon's son and doesn't like Daeron for being...well a pussy. So the story is centered around the various Starks and Targaryens in the conflict of the Blackfyre Rebellion.

I'd like to recommend The Year of the False Spring, which is about the events leading up to Robert's Rebellion. For me, its main strength lies in the fact that it villainizes none of the main characters. Instead, each one has his or her fair share of strengths and weaknesses, but remain likable nonetheless. For example, Robert is good-natured but lets his hormones control much of his thinking, Lyanna has a real streak of spoiled selfishness that seems fitting for someone in her circumstances, while Rhaegar is a curious mixture of strength, romanticism, and chastised pride focused on but not filled up with the prophecies that has loomed over him all his life.
There are some things about the fanfic that I didn't like, but overall, I thought that there were enough interesting interpretations to more than make up for the rare misstep.

If you want a Harry in Westeros fic that makes sense, the Black Prince's rewrite is the closest I've seen. No wand-yet -he's had some minor accidental and levitation magic to his name so far which is already somewhat of a game changer, and his biggest game changer is being a legimitate Baratheon (second son to Robert) with a conscience and the ability to talk to/see ghosts.
A wandless Harry Potter after the end of the story is still more personally dangerous than even the Red Priestess when it comes to being in the same room...and the author's reasonable about that.
Reasonable butterflies for being a post-death Harry reincarnated in Westeros. Currently fostering with Tywin Lannister.

The titular character would be Logan aka Wolverine of the X-Men sent to Westeros under yet unrevealed circumstances and these days a friend of the Starks of Winterfell. It's a fanfic that I first read on, but it's since been uploaded to too. It's a rather classic clash of modern vs. medieval, but it's sort of a deconstruction of the cliche. The megacorporation that calls itself "The Company" (they trademarked the name) lands on Westeros to bring them joys of modern medicine, capitalism and dangerous ideas - and to make money of course. It's a well-written story with well fleshed characters. It's a mega-crossover as well, since other books include Middle Earth and Warhammer Fantasy planets too.
IMO well worth the read - the author freely admits that it's a tongue-in-cheek affectionate parody of the genre, rather than any serious attempt.

Insane Violent Power Trip

I'm going to get back to TOWtD and Net Worth soon. This is just to clear my head.
I had intended to name it Sleeping with the Boys, as it does use the wake up with a dude mechanic for the universal jumps, but I decided against it because this is going to be nothing like Sleeping with the Girls. The title I picked, I feel, is an honest expression of what this little fic is going to be.
I might attempt an actual plot, but right not this is an unabashed wankfic. Read at your own peril. Heads get bashed in, kicked in, dribbled like basketballs.

Unrecommended by JakeCrown & Murazor.
Just for starters, the author repeats warnings about the fic being "very sexually open".
Also, even though it is in the Game of Thrones section, the author is apparently following book ages/dates.
Also, Naruto is a normal human born in Westeros, who might get superpowers (apparently determined by reader input).
First thoughts: I dislike pretty much all of the above, for a variety of reasons. Particularly, listing the story as a GoT/Naruto crossover seems to me to be a somewhat dishonest attempt to get more readers.
Title of first chapter is Naruto Baratheon. Apparently, he is the son of Cersei.
Second thought: Random Japanese name in Westeros is dumb as heck, but then GRR Martin has done his fair share of dumb names and references. Strike two, but not a dealbreaker on its own.
Naruto who is not Naruto in personality, background, abilities or anything except a somewhat vague physical resemblance wants the throne when he is six years old, hates Joffrey and is training himself in stealth or something. Also, he is randomly sent north to be fostered by the Starks.
Strike three: Story shows every sign of being shit. It is not the most terrible thing I've read, not even the worst this month, but as far as potential reading goes, I'd rather pick the telephone guide.

Dragons Arrival
By Eternity07
A plot bunny that got stuck in may head, this is based right after Black Powder War. If you haven't read His Majesty's Dragon, you should its a good series.
William Laurence’s last thought before being swallowed by the storm was of regret. He had led a group of refugees from the Fortress City of Danzig out into the sea. The French had been hounding them for some time before running into the Storm. Warnings had been shown by the sea going dead before dark clouds began to gather. To Laurence’s experience, it was the strangest thing ever; never did a storm appear so suddenly. French ships had stopped their pursuit when they sailed towards the storm.
In the end, it had been a mistake, many of the dragons had to land on the ships because of the increasing wind speed. Temeraire and his crew had been the last to stay above before the storm forced them into its eye. At that moment, Laurence prayed to god for the first time since he was a child, and in that second a bright light flared before them. It would be the last time, which the world would hear of Captain Laurence and Temeraire along with the Ships accompanying them.
For another world, it would be the day that Dragons reappeared to change the world.

End Result: Theon grows up with the Baratheons/Lannisters, alongside Joffery and watched/manipulated by Ceresei. (May also encounter the Hound, Tyrion, Varys, etc so it could go either way. Bonus points if King Robert acts more fatherly with him than Joffery.
Asha/Yara (Not sure if I should do book/show) is fostered at Winterfell, not quite fitting in, but not as much of an outcast as Theon. Possible big sister example for Arya, either friend/romantic interest in Jon, (The two of them going on adventures in Braavos or something would be great) (Would depend on character/age)
Balon keeps ruling the Iron Islands, remarries, and has other Heirs to solidify his position, consigning his first childeren to their fates.

The Halkegenian Invasion Of Westeros
By Andmeuths
I am cross-posting this work from the Zero no Tsukima thread, because I would like to know how accessible this crossover between ZnT and ASOIAF/GOT is those who know nothing about the ZnT universe. And because I suspect that reactions would be different, in this fanbase. This work is a crossover between ZnT and GoT.
The premise is simple: the whole of Halkgenia is reversed summoned ontop of Valyria, in the Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones world.
All the four Void Mages (including Louise ) tried to pull off the Genocide Ritual against the Elves. It backfired horribly.... and reversed summoned the entirety of Halkgenia, where the Windstone Catastrophe had begun to unfold, right into the world of Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire. More precisely, the exact site of the Genocide Ritual was transposed onto Valyria - and Volantis, for that matter, during Volantis final war against Tyrosh.

Someone Is Angry On The Internet

My position on so-called "fan fiction" is pretty well known. I'm against it, for a variety of reasons that I've stated previously more than once. I won't repeat 'em here.

Caught Between Two Brothers
By WhosThatChic
Samantha Walden is rotten to her core, her father a well respected nobleman brings her to Winterfell to marry the heir and what should be an easy arrangement ends up tearing 2 brothers apart. This is full of lemons and AU, so this will not completely follow the show. ***I have new videos for this story, you can look at my profile page to see the link.***

Here's another rec, a series of Arya/Aegon fics that I actually like though a little bit sketchy when it comes to the writing at times, it's decent enough to warrant a read:

The Wandering Wolf

AU: What if Ned had a third brother? what would be his place in the world? Just how would he affect the War of the Five Kings?

The first few chapters are a little shaky.... but they get very solid afterwards... the plot is also extremely refreshing and different to your normal plotlines :)

World Of Thrones
By Xenter
Here I am, standing above all else and before me the foundation of a nation I laid down with nothing but my own two hands. It felt like a dream, so surreal, but I could not refute it. It was solid - concrete - as the scars on my back, the blood I spill, the tears I shred, the pain I suffered and the hardships I endured. Not really a self-insert, but first person POV. AU? R&R!

Are these all Game of Thrones stuff?

You might want to edit the title pf the thread, cause it's misleading. I for one don't care for GOT but the title made this thread sound like an all-purpose archive.

This represents... maybe 5% of the thread I am mirroring? The rest is of various fandoms, including Mass Effect, Naruto, Harry Potter, My Little Pony and various others, but I'll be posting those sections later.
