This bit in the book actually annoyed me at first.

Up until now every single time Tolkien used the term 'man' he was referring the human race as a whole, but now suddenly it referred to sex?

I got over it quickly, because it was nice to see a woman actually do something for once.

IIRC, it's is more like....

Daughter (who is starting to think she's the one who's going to kill it, as obviously she's no man...) Oh father, do you mean ... ?

I got over it quickly, because it was nice to see a woman actually do something for once.

It's intended in both senses, actually - the prophecy is a double-whammy. The hobbit who stabs him in the knee isn't a Man (as in the race), and the human who stabs him in the face isn't a man (as in the gender).
