Mira vanishes among the trees. From one moment to the next you can't see her at all.

Amboss, meanwhile, looks at Maggie with irritation at being interrupted in his pipe-smoking. At her question about Fritz's guns, he first pauses to sort something out with his pipe, before answering, irritably, "Guns? Fritz? What are you talking about?"

The Kislevites approach closer and you can now see it's a group of four lancers escorting an individual on horseback in the middle of them. The person is dressed in rich black furs and rides a fine horse.

"Verdammte Scheisse!", swears Amboss, "They've sent a fucking Chekist." All of you have heard of the feared Kislevite secret police, who, in their kingdom, have even more latitude in rooting out wrongdoers (or who the Tsarina considers a wrongdoer) than the imperial Roadwardens do in the Empire.

The Kislevites draw up on the other side of the river and the Chekist, a woman in her thirties with a friendly expression, nudges her steed out onto the ice. "Herr Amboss," she says, in heavily accented Old Worlder, "I formally request permission to come across. I have been sent to... aid you in your inquiries about the killing of our men on your territory." She smiles warmly, although the meaning of the words is accusatory. Her gaze takes in your whole group.

Amboss dithers for a moment and Nix looks terrified. Eventually Amboss moves to go meet the Chekist on the ice. As a mark of respect, it is appropriate for him to meet her literally half-way on the border itself and therefore on a neutral spot.

Staying where she is Maggie remarks to her companions about Amboss

"And that gentleman is our criminal."

"What have you discovered?" As she speaks she shows them the bullets she had found.

Sevhim baulks at the sight of the Chekist, and despite standing by the Sarge, tries to make himself less conspicuous. He fumbles in his pocket and produces the charm, passing it over for her inspection.

"'S'a token, Sarr. Tor. Thunder n' such." He pauses to see if she understands the reference then continues, "Found up ways, near them trees." He lowers his voice, adding, "Kislev token."

"Aye well you should probably keep it, we're gonna need as much luck as we can get with this one" and she hands it back with a wink.

Then looking from Sevhim to the Chekist she adds "Ah relax, it's just a person, like you and me and remember we're Roadwardens and the gods are always on our side."

Otto says softly "It looks like the ambushers didn't have horses when they came here so it looks like they didn't come too far. They did take up the the horses from the sled so that will hopefully give us a trail to follow."

As Amboss approaches the Chekist, she does not dismount. Instead he is forced to talk up to her and they converse quietly for a moment. The Chekist's expression becomes grave, then she turns to her lancers and barks an order, at which they turn their horses back East. A curt jerk of her chin towards Amboss and he leads her horse by the reins onto the bank where you stand, as if he were just her squire.

But her imperious manner changes entirely when she meets you. She dismounts and smiles broadly, "Ah, so you must be the famous Imperial Roadwardens! It is a great honour to meet you." She pulls off a glove and shakes your hands one after another, giving no impression that she recognises Sevhim and, indeed, seeming to have forgotten Amboss's existence entirely. He takes the opportunity to slink away to the edge of the group, where Nix carefully keeps him between herself and the Chekist.

"I will come to the point, yes?", the Kislevite continues, "My name is Anastasia Amatova and I am a member of Her Imperial Majesty's Cheka. Perhaps you have heard of us. We work for the Tsarina to make sure that those who have broken our law do not break it twice and that those who plan to break it never do. Like you, yes? I am sort of Roadwarden." She smiles, exuding warm collegiality, but it is quickly followed by an expression of regret: "I have just been told that there were no survivors of the Kossars or the woman. That is bad. Very bad. I was supposed to be travelling with them, but unrelated, uh..., political business delayed me. Ursun or perhaps even your Sigmar was watching over me, yes? I am here to help you, how do you say, get to the bottom of this barrel. Your Elector has been very kind to allow it." She is friendly and professional but leaves no doubt that she expects to be included in the investigation. "I would be very happy if you would just treat me like the colleague I am, as I will do for you if we go to my country. But I know I am a guest here, so it is only right if I tell you what I know first, then you tell me what you know, yes? So your Black Kaiser is until now a problem for some years and many merchants on this border hire guards because of him. Lots of work for Kossars! But in last year Kaiser is also attacking these guarded convoys. Nothing on this scale until now, but still. He has guns. We do not know where from, but guns are from the Empire, yes? From your famous forges of Nuln, yes?" It's certainly true that Nuln is known for its gun-making, and while the Empire may not have a monopoly on guns north of Tilea, it is certainly well ahead of any other Human realm in this technology. For many outside the Empire, the term 'guns' conjures up images of the Empire and nowhere else.

"It pains me to speak badly of a great prince of the Empire," Anastasia continues, "But your Margrave was not helpful. He denied this Kaiser was even from the Empire! This changed only when we captured Olga Ferderova." You notice that as she talks, Anastasia is apparently absent-mindedly wandering away from the bank and also away from where Amboss and Nix are nervously loitering. Her voice has also dropped so that to hear her clearly you are forced to follow. "This proved it, of course. The widow of a respected imperial riverwarden was an outlaw! Normally we would simply have asked her for information and of course she would have provided it sooner or later. But, my friends," and at this point Anastasia stops pacing and her voice drops to its lowest, "She said she had information that she would share in the Empire at a public trial. Apparently she had a brother in trouble she wanted to help and this was her offer of a deal. Embarrassment for the Margrave and public vindication for Kislev in return for her and her brother's lives." Anastasia shrugs. "So the order came that we would take her to the Empire under cover of delivering her for justice and in return for helping you root out the Kaiser. But, as you know, that did not happen." She crosses her arms and looks around at you. "So that is my story, now what is yours? Have you discovered interesting things? And we should be sending the Margrave's man back home, yes? You are Roadwardens. You are not needing a lesser authority here, no? And he is not a useful man, I think."

Maggie looks at Amboss and says so only the Chekist can hear "He is a suspect. So I shall keep him close for now."

For the moment that is all she says, instead studying the Kislivite closely.

Otto greets Anastasia, staying quiet while she speaks. "We have found a little information, but it appears that these bandits do have access to more guns than would be usual for a bunch of vagabonds in the woods. That will steer our investigation and plans for dealing with them." He speaks quietly not wanting his words to carry to Amboss.
