Okay, I finally have a day without too much going on. Couple of chores around the house, but nothing too crazy. Let’s enjoy some anime. It’s Mob Psycho 100 II, episode 08! Here we GO!

Spoiler: Show

-Childhood. Young Ritsu and Shigeo are chasing after one of those cheap glider planes you make out of foam core or balsa wood, when Shigeo trips, drops, and scuffs his knee…And his sorrow over the pain sends the little plane, their picnic lunch, and all manner of things flying.

-Opening! Now with subs! Get ready, wake your psyche up, MOB! Get ready, dig your anger up, MOB! Get ready, wake your psyche up, MOB! Get READY!

-Episode 008! Even Then ~Continue Onward~

-We begin with Ichi, who’s seeing that the Psycho Helmet Religion has become legit and has their own HQ now. They’ve outright recruiting now and preaching. Some of the folks joining are just doing it for the memes, but some are legit…And this might lead to all manner of things! If Mob were to be found, when he’s ready…

-…Well, it’d be fun.

-Cut to class, where the middle school marathon has arrived! Every last student will have to run the five kilometers. And after class, Ichi comes up to ask Mob to talk after school. She’ll…She’ll be waiting up on the roof.

-Oh snap. Maybe you’ll get asked out for real this time, Mob! Excited? He is not.

-Cut to the roof, where Ichi focuses on the marathon, and Mob quietly gets that tiny little disappointment when you didn’t expect more, but kinda hoped for it. Like when you think a parent miiiight be lying about not getting you a certain present. Am I the only one that tied themselves up into knots over that kinda thing?

-Anyways Ichi wants him to go all psychic runner extreme and make a big display for the Psycho Helmet people. Mob’s mood just rollercoastered so hard I think a safety bar had to be lowered. But also, apparently, the Psycho Helmet leaders managed to get a shot of Mob from behind, and saw the logo on his uniform. They know he goes to this school, and believe he was involved with the poltergeist event tied to Reigen…There will be people here looking for a middle school boy with amazing psychic powers!

-Kay.

-He’s still gonna do it with his leg parts. He wants to do well with his own strength. And maybe even, next year, place in the top ten.

-…They’re gonna be focusing on high school entrance exams next year, man! You won’t have time.

-Shit! His, his whole plan…He was hoping to place in the top ten next year, and with that confidence boost, finally confess to Tsubomi-chan…! To prove he was cool enough for her!

-Oh my god our little Mob is growing up so fast.

-Okay, okay new plan. He has to grow up FASTER. He’s going to place in the top ten next week using his leg muscles!

-Cut to the Telepathy Club slash Body Improvement Club. Where his bros aren’t in, but the telepathy kids are, and he tells them his plan…Of course, their leader is full of despair and negativity, but the others want to try and help. Which is when former bad-boy Tenga arrives, and if you want to be at the top, there’s only one thing to do! To push with everything you’ve got! You READY, big man?

-…Yes!

-Then take these top-notch running shoes. And make it happen.

-Wow, he’s pretty cool—The other Body Improvement guys are out working them legs, and casually say that he accidentally bought the shoes in the wrong size, but hey, glad they’re going to a good home! …Well, you all just sucked the drama out of the room.

-To the office! Where Reigen reminisces about getting out of those middle school marathons. When he hears…Mob is going to try and ask out the girl he likes?! Oh SHIT. …Change of plans. Mob, you’re on vacation. He’s got no clients coming in this week and you need the time to focus on your marathon. (His calendar is chock full.)

-Now get into your running clothes. Time to check out this course.

-Hard cut to Reigen and Mob out there…And Reigen is doing even worse than Mob. Oof. They run past Ritsu, and Dimple casually confirms that if Mob does well at the marathon, he’s gonna ask Tsubomi out! Oh SHIT. …Except Ritsu remembers playing with her when they were all kids, and he found her very frustrating. She was the kind of kid who’d give up and go home if she couldn’t find you while playing hide and seek.

-Ritsu can only hope his brother will be okay…But he’s got to support him. That night, he takes over washing Mob’s dishes, while Mob sleeps like the dead…

-He goes jogging the course with Reigen every evening. He runs through the theory of the proper run with his bros in the club every afternoon. He jogs with them every morning. And bit by laborious bit, Mob manages to pull himself together…

-While Reigen calls in Ritsu and Teruki for backup. He needs some more pairs of hands around here. Which is when Tsubomi and her friend come in…And Ritsu just straight up hides! Oh FUCK, if she finds out Mob normally works here…

-Anyways, they’re here for Reigen’s life coaching and relationship advice services, particularly this friend…She’s in a classic teenage conundrum. Basically, she likes this sports guy, right? So she wants to get him something sportsy, like some nice cleats. But if they’re too nice, he might not want to damage them by using them, or the monetary worth might take precedence over the emotional weight. Classic sort of problem. Reigen thinks the better place to start is with friendship, get to know him, don’t rush to do the rooftop confession thing.

-Also Tsubomi notices the photos of Reigen’s satisfied customers, including a few with Mob in them, and she now has questions.

-Actually her questions are about this person she knows from cram school who she can’t stop thinking about and she’s wondering if she should ask them out…Ritsu despairs at what’s going to happen to his brother if this goes through. And Reigen, having no idea what’s about to happen, casually encourages Tsubomi to ask them out. If this person is walking home with you after cram school, they certainly care about you to some degree, so take the shot kiddo.

-It’s all over, and Ritsu is just internally screaming.

-After Tsubomi and her friend head out…It turns out she made that whole story up. She wanted to see how Reigen took it, to make sure he wasn’t a scam artist. But he actually listened to her and thought about the story she gave, so he’s probably at least as legit as you’re gonna get from a relationship advice person…Also she definitely noticed that photo with Mob.

-Commercial break!

-And we’re back! It’s the big day! Everyone’s all tense and fired up…Ichi knows some of the Psycho Helmet people are watching. If they can just get a display…

-While the telepathy club guys faked colds. …GET YOUR ASSES IN LINE EVEN MOB IS RUNNING YOU FUCKS.

-Speaking of Mob, he’s panicked inside…When his bros come to pump him up! They’re gonna be going all out today, so they’re rivals on this day…But they’re rooting for you to give your best possible result. You’ve got this!

-And now, the guys all pack in for their turn at the course…And GO!

-The first wave is chaos, as everyone jockeys for position…And Mob gets pushed over! His knee’s bleeding…But unlike when he was a boy, this time he forces himself up, and keeps moving! With the injured leg, he’s slowed down, as the pack starts thinning out…But he can’t, won’t, give up. His parents see him run past, and even lagging behind, he’s so determined…His mother’s gonna make him his favorite dish tonight. Whatever his results, that boy’s earned it.

-The girls are watching…Including Tsubomi, who sees Mob so focused that her cheer falls on deaf ears…But as hard as Mob tries, his form’s starting to slip up. That leg might’ve gotten sprained or a muscle could’ve been pulled…

-When Reigen arrives, running alongside the course! Come on, Mob, only a kilometer left! You can do this, buddy!

-Reigen quietly admits to Dimple, that Mob’s 74th right now. Compared to his old results, that’s amazing, but the kid’s set that rule of finishing in the top ten. He’s got a huge gap to cover. …Should they call a taxi? Reigen legitimately considered the possibility. But no. That kid’s still fired up. He’s still pushing through the pain. They’re not letting him drop, not ye—

-Hard cut to Mob waking up in the nurse’s office. He finds his teacher there…And learns he never even finished. But he hears his brother managed to finish 9th, and he’s so proud of Ritsu…While his teacher, too, thinks Mob has become such a stronger person than he was before.

-Back at the finish line, the Psycho Helmet people are wondering where their glorious leader is…While Mob gathers up his things, and prepares to head out. Back at the house, everyone’s eager for Mob to get home, and his mother still plans on making a special takoyaki night, since Ritsu did so well and Mob pushed himself so hard. They’ve both earned this special treat! Oh, doorbell!

-Ritsu goes to get it…And finds the redheaded boy from the whole Claw situation on the other side. Here to get the vengeance he promised.

-On his way home, Mob sees a thin plume of smoke rising in the distance…From the direction of his home…

-By the time he gets there. He finds the entire building ablaze. In a haze, Mob steps into the complex, expecting his family has to be somewhere, has to be safe…He has to know they weren’t in the thick of this…His father’s strict but reliable, he’d never let any of them get hurt. His mother’s always so careful with fire, she’d be ready if anything happened. His brother’s brilliant, confident, and cool as a cucumber, he’d know what to do if things went sideways. Any one of them would have gotten the others out. Any one of them would ensure they were all safe.

-Mob’s emotional capacity, 91%.

-The house is a tragedy. But they’re things. Objects. What matters is the people. The people have to be okay. He has to see that they’re not in here. Has to know they’re okay. There’s nobody here…That’s good, right? That’s good…

-When Dimple spots signs of a struggle at the door. Someone forced their way in.

-Which means someone did this.

-Which means…

-Someone has his family.

-92, 93%. He needs to search while the place is still intact, needs to find answers, needs to…

-He steps in…And finds…Bodies.

-Mob’s emotional capacity, 100 125 150 200 ???% !!!%

-The beast is loosed.

-And it demands blood for blood.

-Credits.

…Mob…No…

There was a LOT of screaming from the audience when that ending showed up. At least you dont have to wait a week to see what happens next like we did. Edge of the seat waiting with that one.

It can be worse.

Like, reading Fullmetal Alchemist as it comes out, towards the end. We had to wait a month while it looked like everyone in Amestris was dead.

So I had plans to go out today. But it’s over 110 degrees so I think I’m staying the fuck indoors. Anyways, it’s Mob Psycho 100 II, episode 09! Here we GO!

Spoiler: Show

-We begin right where we left off, with Mob seeing the death and destruction…Dimple tries to pull him to focus, because these are mimicries! This isn’t your family! You need to pull your head in the game to get them back!

-And in a flash, Mob blasts out a signal across the entire city. He finds them. He has them! His family! Tears flow from his eyes, as Mob is able to pull himself back to focus…But even if the beast’s collar is back in place, it is still hungry.

-Mob’s emotional capacity, 100%.

-And that’s when Mob makes a meteor impact upon some more bad psychics. Ready to wreck some shit.

-Opening! Coming down, could you fill your satisfaction? You’re a MOB. Can’t you feel your own frustration? Coming down, could you fill your satisfaction? You’re a MOB. What do you want to be? Wear your overflowing emotions on your sleeve, and break it down! What do you see, once you go beyond your limits?

-Episode 009! Show Me What You’ve Got ~Band Together~

-Sidenote, I’m not gonna claim it’s a definite reference, but the fact that the 009 episode has red and gold for its title card does stick out to me, as the kind of tiny stupid bullshit I’d squeak in.

-Night. At his apartment, Teruki’s bringing in some laundry from the line…And finds another motherfucker there, who unleashes a telekinetic explosion on him!

-Back at the crosswalk, the two psychics attack Mob…And he doesn’t even flinch, just locking one up and demanding his family back. The damn fool’s electricity doesn’t even reach Mob, before he up and throws the guy away…Which leaves his companion. What do you have to offer his vengeful wrath?!

-What he has to offer is MUSCLE ESP! IT IS LIKE MUSCLE MAGIC BUT WITH BRAIN

-Mob does not have time for this school-grade bullshit. He just does his own MUSCLE ESP, and who the fuck was the one who faked his family’s death?! WHO MADE THE DUMMIES?!

-Then the damn fool passes out…And the electric guy is unconscious, too, but not before reporting he called this in.

-Fine. Perfectly fine. Mob doesn’t care. He needs answers, maybe the guys coming in will have them. An umbrella starts working through the crowd, coming for him…

-Which is about when a car whips around, and an ex-Claw man, Koyama(the dude with all the piercings) snaps Mob up! Him and Sakurai, the glasses man. Both are trying to help…

-But as soon as Mob hears they’re not connected to the disappearance of his family, he just puts a barricade in front of the car and stops it cold. Let him out. NOW. Wait, wait, your comrades are waiting for you! You can’t do this alone!

-Reigen’s caught up in this, too? Then no time to waste! Mob lifts the wrecked car up, and shoots it in the direction they were driving.

-Which gets them to the meeting of the ex Claw men…And every other damn psychic around. Reigen’s at the center of it all, and Mob’s rage finally breaks down…Leaving just the fear and doubt of a scared young man with nowhere else to turn.

-Reigen hears the whole situation, and quickly pulls Dimple aside. This idea of fake bodies. Did you make that shit up? Kinda, yes, but then Mob actually got a signal. His family is out there…You seriously fucked up, Dimple. If this hadn’t gone the way it has, you would be so screwed. But, that’s not the point right now.

-The point is, Reigen goes back over to Mob, and listen. Your family’s okay. The guys who were coming for you weren’t even there yet. Either your family’s being held hostage…Or someone came to pull a rescue. But either way, they’re alive. And they’re gonna be found.

-And with that simple bit of comfort from Reigen, Mob just…Passes out, as the beast calms and the boy can’t keep himself functioning. He’s down to 2%, and out cold.

-Which leaves the question of why all these ex-7th Division members are here. Well, it turns out that getting your ass kicked by a couple of middle schoolers and a fraudulent psychic gives you a lot to think about, and they’ve been trying to make themselves into better people. But Claw is like any organized crime family, you don’t get to leave. Every last one of them got attacked at once.

-HQ is coming to finish the job. They needed a leader, a central figure to pull a coordinated defense…And they saw Reigen’s display on TV. He’s got the big-picture awareness to be the type who can rally everyone…

-Of course, he didn’t escape an attack entirely, either. He happened to be out taking with people about renovating his office, when the thing got blown the fuck up. So, uh, he really needs those renovations now.

-But first, they’ve got to solve this. And also, wheres Teruki? Is he okay? One of the psychic kids from Ritsu’s program confirms that he sent her a message. He’s alive. …Wait, shit, you and he exchanged email addresses?! The guys quietly despair.

-And that’s when Teruki arrives, bringing an unconscious would-be attacker with him! Hey, guys.

-So…Hard cut right to torturing the guy, who cracks in about two seconds. Seems the head of Claw is looking for strong psychic soldiers all around the world…And Reigen sees this is a problem. Okay, first, report all of it to the police.

-Cut to one of Claw’s international men, Joseph, now in the city, and his partner Udo…

-Commercial break!

-And we’re back! At the center of Claw, the man in charge of it all, one Suzuki Toichiro, addresses his soldiers…He’s about to unleash open war. 20 years of preparation are all coming to a fruition, at this moment! Joseph and Udo are there, leaving me wondering the exact timing of this scene…As one of the men with technokinesis simply forcefully takes over all local broadcasts and Toichiro addresses all of Japan…

-Everyone’s watching. The internet is…Mostly mocking it, but they’re reacting too. And then the whole thing goes dark…

-Much to the anger and frustration of the younger Suzuki. Sho here had a whole plan and his father just ruined it! Ritsu, come on! Ritsu is still not sure about this.

-Look. LOOK. He got your parents out of the line of fire. They’re off at a fucking hot springs, right? He’s got the livestream right here, he’s got men watching them, they’re fine. NOW HELP HIM WRECK HIS FATHER’S SHIT.

-Ritsu’s other concern, of course, is about Mob. …Mob’s not part of the plan. Sho could tell from one look at him. Your brother’s too locke down. He’s not going to be willing to go on a personal vengeance quest…Unless others were in the line of fire.

-Wait…Wait, what did you do, Sho?!

-Cut back to Claw, where their troops have their rough plan. They have about 600 troops. There are roughly 600,000 armed police and self-defense troops inside of Japan, the best population ratio they’ve got…Each man will be facing a thousand troops.

-Joseph, Udo, and three other international soldiers quietly tuck in under a stairwell to talk about their real plan. To break Claw apart from within. That’s a much smaller fight. Each of them only has to stop 120 of these wayward psychics…And if they can crack the upper echelon? The rest will crumble.

-Udo doesn’t even bother to be subtle, he just goes and tells the leaders what he’s doing…And then, he bulks up and up and UP with oh so much MUSCLE ESP. The result is…Not pretty.

-While Joseph goes to confront Toichiro. And reveal that he got paid by the Japanese government to end this before it starts…

-But Joseph in turn gets surprised by another man. With an umbrella…A loyalist.

-Joseph unleashes his psychic power of WHITE NOISE, blowing thick smoke from his cigarette that quickly seals up into solid matter! But the whole structure is slammed into…With the body of one of his companions! Toichiro isn’t alone, joined by others of his Ultimate 5…The entire attempt to break them did nothing, because the division leaders were never the power structure for Claw. Their true power is the Ultimate 5…

-Which includes umbrella man, who easily breaks through the White Noise, and slams Joseph clear through the the building. Also, it turns out he’s a redeemed shut-in, courtesy of Toichiro’s encouragement. But we’ve only seen four of the Ultimate 5. Where’s the last man…?

-Back at the hideout, the whole gang’s gobbling up a mighty meal…They never saw the message, having no TV on in the room while they feast.

-The next morning, as the prime minister gives a presentation on improving the situation for women in the modern workplace…His security detail gets knocked the fuck out, by the last man. Shimazaki-san, who’s here to abduct the Prime Minister in front of all of these people and make a big show of it. Things turn into a panic, as Shimazaki’s eyes see not the future, but possible futures, letting him dodge the bullets…Until one just stops cold in front of him, spinning to a stop on the tip of his nose.

-And then he casually grabs the PM and teleports away…

-Only for the man to be whipped out of there, and a huge explosion going off around Shimazaki! Because Teruki is making his first counterattack on the situation. He unleashes an Explosion, and his Air Whips…But Shimazaki’s able to dodge it all, teleporting behind Teruki to grapple him up!

-It’s not over yet…PYROKINESIS! The flames force Shimazaki to back off, but Teruki’s got no options…And he gets kicked square through a chainlink fence! Super speed…? Okay, now he’s got to buy time! MULTI-LAYER BARRIER! Teruki kicks up layers of defense all around him and the Prime Minister, hoping to just keep this fucker back…

-But Shimazaki gets inside it, and with one solid gut punch, Teruki’s barriers shatter, and the kid hits the dirt. Shimazaki grabs up the PM and teleports away, as the others arrive too late to do anything…

-Credits! I spilled a seed and lost sight of it…I’ll find it using the color it’s dyed in, and watch it grow! It immediately returned to the palm of my hand…But it’s still too light and too frail to reach for the skies!

Welllll shit. On the one hand, Mob’s family is okay. On the other, this whole situation just got complicated. Very, very complicated. We’ll just have to watch the fallout next time, in episode TEN of Mob Psycho 100 II! Wait for it!

A lot of psychics have multiple powers, but Shimazaki being able to use two at the same time is apparently kind of a big deal.

What is that a possible reference to?
Cyborg 009, a classic manga series by Shotaro Ishinomori. The main characters are classically almost always wearing red and yellow/gold, and each one has a crazy cyborg gimmick trick not entirely unlike the way most espers have their one weird ESP trick.
