Yeah, about that. HDimagination, you're not cleared to read said RP until you've finished, mostly because during the early pages of it we aren't quite in character yet and make references to late/endgame stuff, and there was one guy who threw out like, ALL THE SPOILERS as part of his posts

For context, back in the distant future of the year 2015, there was a simultaneous real-time WIW and a corresponding real-time RP of people posting in-universe to the forums. It was a blast.

I believe that's a positron cannon, no? I don't know how they're generating positrons with nothing but current (but it's been a while, maybe they've already got the antimatter and they just need the charge to propel it), but they behave much as I'd expect. A charged particle beam will try to preserve its momentum, but will also be repelled by particles with the same charge; so a "beam clash" with coherent positron emission weapons will basically act like buttered cats on a polished floor, sailing past each other and bouncing away uncontrollably.

Also, technically non-nuclear! Technically.
The beam reaction was good, it subverted expectations, and yeah, High frequency particle cannons probably would do something more wibbly like was shown rather than the traditional meet in the middle clash. Also I love the cat simile...

Sounds cool, once I’m at the appropriate moment, post the link and I’ll give it a read!

Now, Stranger Things Season 3 starts today, so that will be taking up my Netflix time for the next few days, so there might be a brief hiatus. But so as not to leave you hanging…

Eva -07 The works of man

Gendo is chatting to some-one in his big spooky office. They say that some-one is trying to get info on the Nerv using the Freedom of information act, which given what I do for a living is funny in all sorts of ways. Looks like they are building unit-02…

Ok, we get upbeat domestic comedy music alongside Shinji’s breakfast. We get Misato’s thoughts on Japanese breakfast traditions (a can of beer) and Shinji tells her that if she wasn’t such a slob she’d have a boyfriend by now. Smooth… but you can tell that these two have settled into a bit of domestic equilibrium. Hell, she’s wheedled him enough about his attitude and being a real man that I figure that turnaround is fair play. It’s future day at school, and she’s in loco parentis But I’m guessing that Shinji would probably still rather that his father gave a damn about him. Also… Future career plans for Shinji? Hooking his mind up to a mecha and fighting Cthulhu’s extended family should keep him occupied for a while. He asks her not to answer the door to his friends in her underwear, and after he leaves, she reflects that he seems to be doing better now, something I’m sure will continue for the foreseeable future, Teenagers being known for their emotional stability.

She turns up at school like a stunt driver and turns the heads of every boy in the class. At least Shinji seems to have slotted her nicely into the role of big sister I guess. They say something about Shinji protecting the earth, which gets him wondering about the Evas and what they are, especially after the skull and spooky eye he saw after he woke up. The entry plug also smells of blood when he’s in it, but it feels warm and safe. LIKE A WOMB! Now I have images of Shinji falling into the Binding of Isaac and he wouldn’t feel out of place in the slightest. Eva 02 is on the way from Germany. Does that mean there are attacks elsewhere? Or are they just building it over there? Nerv’s budget is not infinite after all. Gendo discusses matters with some-one on a plane to a budget meeting, and there are plans in place for at least SIX more Eva units, after all, military spending is good for the economy. Interesting how there were only four kids who could be found as suitable pilots.

Ritsuko fills in Shinji on the truth behind ‘Second Impact’ it wasn’t a meteorite, it was humans who dug up the first Angel in Antarctica, which then exploded and caused the Ice cap to melt. Man, and Kurt Russel thought he had it bad. But, that does explain why the weather isn’t as bad as it should be after a meteorite strike. I should thank my Hugo reading and ‘The Calculating Stars’ for my having picked up on that… Nerv is dedicated to preventing ‘Third Impact’ but that doesn’t exactly tell us what happened, what the Angels want or What Nerv is doing that it needs the EVAs to distract every-one about what is actually going on. Have they got another Angel in their base that they are experimenting on? Are they slicing parts of it off to build the EVAs? Are we in the city built around the Tarrasque?

The next day, Misato is dressed for business, and heading to Old Tokyo for the day. She won’t be back till later.

Part 2: A human work (pretty close to the overall title I suppose).

So, the sunken city that we saw before is Old Tokyo, and Misato and Ritsuko are heading to a testing ground in the middle of it. Hah, looks like Nerv isn’t very popular with the rest of the military industrial complex. No one is sat at their table and they aren’t given any food. But then, if you put a shitbag like Gendo in charge of your agency I can imagine that’s not going to make you any friends. Ok, so they are building a competitor to the EVAs, the Mech image that we saw earlier, that I mistook for EVA 02. It's one with a internal reactor. Ritsuko gives them a hard time, and ends up getting a talking to by the smarmy guy holding the presentation. I mean, he’s not wrong about Nerv, how they put their pilots at risk of psychological contamination and can’t control the EVAs, causing them to go on rampages, but the part where he compares them to hysterical women is… well the flags are clear. He does refer to the EVAs as Monsters though, and no-one bats an eyelid. Ritsuko states that she believes in the strength of science and the hearts of their Pilots to keep the EVAs under control. Maybe give Rei some-one to be her caretaker then? So she’s not living in filth and sleeping on a pillow soaked in her own blood maybe? The company can’t overcome the AT field. Though. Misato takes out the humiliation on a nearby locker after the meal is over, but Ritsuko isn’t fussed. She knows that they don’t stand a chance against the Angels.

So, this is the JA. A Non EVA Mecha. Is this automated? It’s got segmented arms like the automatons from Laputa (Strange that I never heard about the links between Ghibli and EVA before now, there are a lot of common design sensibilities and animation touches). Hah, the thing doesn’t get more than five steps before the reactor craps out and it stops following orders, stepping right through the control centre, and then beginning to Meltdown. Luckily for them Misato is there to Kick their asses and tell them to erase the control program from the Mech to shut it down. HAH! Foiled by middle management/politicians who don’t want to take the responsibility of tanking the big special project. Politicians really are the butt monkeys of ever form of fiction, aren’t they?

Yup, that thing walks just like the Automatons from Laputa. Misato calls for Shinji to be deployed in EVA-01, with a type F loadout. Man, Misato and the Major from GitS would totally be drinking buddies, wouldn’t they? She puts on a suit, and it’s clear she’s going to try to get inside the JA and shut it down from the inside. The command crew in the test area are behind her, and belatedly, so is the asshole form before, who gives her the password to erase the control program of the JA. Shinji voices his concerns about her plan, but forgets that she’s a badass. The Stealth Bomber drops the Eva out the back and we’re on. Misato gets inside after a brief tumble, and the place is red hot. While Shinji holds it back, Misato tries the password… That doesn’t work! Did the guy do her dirty? She says that some-one’s sabotaged the program, and I immediately assume it was Gendo somehow. Now she has to physically extend the control rods into the reactor, which she manages at the last second. Or does some-one remotely re-activate the programme? Ritsuko perhaps? Did she hack it? Misato is a step ahead of me, and a meeting in Gendo’s spooky office confirms to the audience that the two worked together to engineer the whole incident behind Misato’s back. I think she’s earned a few beers though. Looks like Ritsuko is firmly supporting Gendo, whatever his aims may be.

The next morning Shinji has a bug up his ass for some reason though. Oh, he’s just embarrassed by her until Kensuke points out that she only shows that side of herself to him, because they are family.

Good episode, Nice to have the focus off Shinji for a bit. It also makes it clear that whatever is going on at Nerv, Gendo and Ritsuko are in on it, but Misato is in the dark, but then, she’s not built for subtlety…

Unfortunately the early parts of it were largely done with the assumption that everyone participating knows the plot, with a lot of wink-nudge level spoilers and some almost-overt ones. So I can't really recommend reading it until you've finished the series.

It's interesting, the science level here. Everything is limited by the amount of energy that can be produced. The eva's are subject to semi-realistic limits on what they can do. No prolonged fights or magical Phlebotinum here.
Now I wish I knew more about giant hero shows... Didn't Ultraman traditionally have a time limit of a few minutes that he could survive on Earth for a fight?

Why does the automated mecha have an internal control room that looks big enough for quite a crew?
Maybe they wanted options if fully automated didn't work out.

Well, they did state that the Mech was supposed to operate for days without needing recharge, so I'd imagine that it was for people to drop in and do maintenance on the control program and or repairs on the reactor.

Or possibly as an escape pod for rich people whose understanding of the word "apocalypse" starts with the word "another".

Ok, so today: My TV died, My work Computer decided I could do without sound, the start menu and any programs that weren't pinned to my task bar and I didn't manage to eat dinner until about 9pm, So it's time to cheer myself up with some more Eva. That's how this works right?

Last time: A giant robot went crazy, Misato threw herself recklessly into danger and Gendo managed to be an asshole without even being on screen for more than about 2 minutes, so no real shockers there...

Episode 7: Asuka Arrives in Japan.

OK, so let's see, what do I know about Asuka? She puts the Tsun in Tsundere, is Red Oni to Rei's Blue Oni and she wishes she were a lesbian. Sorry, that is my all time favorite AMV, so I make no apologies for sharing it. Also I totally should have recognized Misato from that AMV as well but you live and learn.

Looks like Shinji is on his way to meet her on a 'luxury cruise liner'. For some reason Tohji and Kensuke are along for the ride. Presumably there will be hijinks that a certain redhead will not stand for, and then there will be violence. It looks like this Helicopter is big enough to carry the Eva-01 as well. Guess they are not letting Shinji get too far away from it. She's got a pretty big escort, and entire fleet. Ok, so the captain says that they are delivering the Control Plug for their 'Toy' presumably Eva-02, and Asuka watches their landing from a nearby platform. As they get off their transport, military Otaku Kensuke is getting off in a different way, while class clown Tohji's hat blows across the deck, landing at Asuka's feet. I think I can see where this is going, poor girl. Nope, no Ecchi issues here, as Asuka stomps the cap beneath her feet, giving some fanboys paroxysms of jealously no doubt. Misato knows her quite well, aparently, enough for Asuka to boast to her about her boobs getting bigger. OK then. And there we go. The Ecchi wind is blowing, making a fool of both Asuka and her fashion choices. Wear some trousers girl, a summer dress on the deck of an aircraft carrier going at top speed is not a good combination. Of course Tohji gets a resounding slap for his trouble, decides turnaround is fair play, and gets a second slap to match his first. I'm not normally one for victim blaming, or second guessing people's proclivities, but I wonder if Asuka enjoys the power play more than a little bit. You could have chosen to just give Tohji back his hat, or let it blow away after all. But then, he also could have looked away, not left his head at groin level or flashed his todger. We are two for two on teenage girls being sexualised on their first interactions with Shinji though, so there's that.

Well, looks like Tohji isn't the only one getting into a dick measuring contest. The captain of the fleet (admiral? Not sure the right term) is getting arsey about NERV, and refusing to hand over authority to Misato until they land in Japan. So, five minuites till and Angel shows up and we can all see what an ace pilot Asuka is then? I mean, that's going to be the dynamic right? She's better than Shinji at fighting in the Eva, so he can get all angsty again? Ok, New guy on the scene, looks like he is to Asuka what Misato is to Shinji. Goes buy the name of Kaji. Oh, looks some glowy eyes in the darkness, right on time. They all have to squeeze into the Ecchi lift togeather. Guys, I think it was a mistake to call this ship the USS Hijinks. OHHHH Kaji is the skeevy guy from the AMV above… Crap, this is going to get (even more) creepy, isn't it? He goes full in on rubbing it in that he knows what Misato is like in her sleep, and I'm guessing that she was drunk at the time. He also talks up Shinji's Eva Piloting ability enough so that Asuka looks just about ready to bore through his skull using only her eyes and willpower.

She takes him to see Eva-02, which she boasts about being the first real Eva designed for combat. Oh, so it's the other way around, it the story where the pilot who thinks they are ace gets shown up by the boy who's just plonked into a mecha for the first time. It wasn't fun in Eureka 7, and it's not fun now… Right on time, there is a shockwave, and an Angel (presumably) starts attacking the fleet, and Asuka is overjoyed that she'll get the chance to show off.

Part two: Asuka Strikes!

You go girl, stand up for workers rights and equal pay. Oh, right, not that kind of strike. Man Shinji, Rei and Asuka totally need to unionise. 'Hello, Nerv here!' Misato offers very politely to give them intel on whatever is attacking them, knowing full well they will refuse. I can see why her and Asuka get on. Asuka throws on her Plugsuit in a stairway, and then complains that Shinji peaks on her. I mean, I'm sure he was supposed to know instinctually that she was getting changed without being told. I mean… you dragged him to right where you were getting changed and then very carefully didn't tell him what you were doing. Hmmm… Not sure I vibe that well with the writing of this character. Seems a bit skeevy to me. Hah, she makes him dress in her spare Plugsuit. She is totally topping him. I mean, not in a healthy way, but I wouldn't be surprised if Shinji would be up for a bit of sub play if he wasn't screwed up six ways from Sunday, as long as he got the approval part at the end... *ahem* Sorry, I will avoid applying BDSM interpretations to the interactions for 15 year olds right about now, before I have to put myself on a list.

She's going to show him how it's done, and I'm guessing that this is going to end poorly. They think that the Angel is looking for something, and Misato assumes it's Eva 02. Kaji is on the phone to… Gendo, I assume, who tells him to get out of there by himself if he has to. With the mysterious case that's in his cabin I guess. Asuka fires up her Eva, in German, and then admonishes Shinji for thinking in Japanese. Totally a Dom move, setting up her sub to fail at the task without explaining the rules first. Damn, it happened again. Ok, all the ships are named after Shakespeare plays. Not sure of the symbolism there, but I guess we'll see. Asuka gets the enthusiastic go from Misato, despite the admiral's protests, but she needs the power cable that Misato brought, otherwise Eva-02 only has 58 seconds of power left. Hah! When Eva-02 gets up, she uses the cover around it like a badass samurai cloak, as it leaps between the ships avoiding the Angel. She lands on the carrier (shame about the planes that get dumped in the ocean) and gets plugged into the reactor, and stands ready to kill the Angel. She stops it, but gets pulled underwater leaving her knife behind. Misato warns her that the Eva is not equipped for underwater combat, but she's game anyway.

Kaji bugs out while Eva-02 is being pulled around like a toy by the massive angel. They reach the end of their power cable, and it turns around getting ready to swallow them whole, but it's core is in it's mouth… Misato's plan? Reel them in like a fishing line and then slam two scuttled destroyers into it's mouth. Have I mentioned that I like her style yet? Because I like her style. Right… so why is Shinji at the controls of the Eva at this point? They are playing it off like it's an accident caused by the Eva being pulled around at speed right? I don't buy it. I would much rather Asuka got the kill rather than Shinji at this point, despite everything. Although how much either of them is in control of the situation at this point is debatable. Heh… Asuka has been baiting people all episode, and now they are using the Eva like bait on a fishing line… Ok, they are doing it togeather, as Asuka puts her hands over Shinji's on the controls. I do notice that Asuka is 'on top' as it were in this situation, just the way she likes it… they get into perfect sychronisation just in time for Misato's little presents to arrive and open fire. That's one way to get past an AT field. Eva-02 even manages a super hero landing on the deck of the carrier, only to power down and fall on it's face… Which kinda sums this series up really…

Kaji delivers his case (which we can see now has big Radiation symbols on it) to Gendo. Do we get to see what is inside? We do. The Key to the Instrumentality project. Something has re-constituted it's self: The First Human being? Adam? WHAAAAA? Now what I know about 'insrumentality' is limited to hearing the phrase thrown about in anime circles online. Spoilry speculation below.

Spoiler: Show
I gather it has something to do with A) the collective Unconcious b) every-one turning into goo. So where does this fit in? Is the mythology of this show that Humans fell from a state of grace/garden of Eden situation and Gendo is trying to restore us to whatever we were like before? And the Angels are trying to stop it?

Back in school, Shinji's friends are consoling him that he still has to deal with the 'shrew' (because Shakespeare!) when who should appear as the new transfer student… and much Hijinks will I'm sure ensue...

I kind of wonder why the case had a radiation symbol on it, you'd think a biohazard symbol would be more fitting. Perhaps Kaji's cover story to give for those not in-the-know was that he was carrying a radioactive sample.
